Apparently kids do sometimes haul, they also harvest crops, fill ponds and deconstruct buildings.

Shame, at first I assumed that the toys would be used by kids to help them learn grown-up skills. Like a toy anvil would improve smiting or crafting, toy sword improve their weapon skill. They could randomly pick up and play with the toys if they were happy enough.

I might try a child danger room, maybe release a dingo in the room and have some survival of the fittest.

to get kids to work somewhat, use Dwarf Therapist. They seem to refuse some works though, but are fine with most things. I only rarely see them construct walls, but they work perfectly fine in a masons workshop. They also seem to skill up much faster than adults. I've got some legendary children bonecrafters, miners, farmers, wood burners etc.

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.
