why do only 3 types of creatures show up on my embark site?
« on: April 09, 2012, 12:22:25 am »

Initially I had a Giant Lion and Tiger stroll onto the map, caught em both, great. Since then it has been a decade of NOTHING but giant mosquitos, giant jumping spiders and giant anacondas. once or twice I have seen a falcon or an eagle, but for the rest it has been nothing but those main three, the fortress is nearing a decade in age. I am thinking about FURTHER modding out creatures and regening a world because this is just getting stupid again. First it was 33% badger men 33% giant badgers and 33% badgers 1% other, now its 33% for those three giant creatures. Are the numbers of animals in a biome predetermined? I mean, is it possible that I caught the only single lion and tiger in this biome? If so that would explain it, but the animal frequencies for this embark do not seem random at all.

It depends on the savagery and what biome, untamed wilds have tonnes of giant things, deserts have things like hyenas, Evil things tend to have zombies and evil creatures.

You might just have an extremely bad spot picking skill.

i knew all that before you answered, you did not answer my question at all... here it is again:

are there set numbers of those creatures in each biome? Can a biome 'run out' of giant lions or giant tigers

[06]Yeah.  I've got 5 dumb hunters, that can't seem to kill 3 ravens.  They got 4 of the 7, that originally arrived.  However, until they wipe out the spawn, nothing new is arriving.  I feel your pain.  The problem I am currently having is, the ravens are so high, they don't or won't shoot at them.  So what I have is a bunch of unpathable errors, spamming me to high hell...  I'm trying to find a fix, built a tower to the top of the area, however, the stupid hunters and ravens won't go over to it and fight...  I'm a little frustrated with this aswell.  Atleast its free.

I don't think hunters can shoot the ravens that perch over the murky pools.  Mine don't atleast.  Maybe this is a bug, dunno.  I've formed a squad to eliminate them, but for some odd reason, these marksmen don't shoot anymore...  Ugg!  I must have the quiver bug.  Dunno.

More critters will show up if ya keep eliminating the ones in your region, until you wipe out the worlds pop of that species..  Same will happen in caverns.  Good luck, Knutor

Yes. More specifically, a biome that has giant lions has between 5 and 10 prides (of up to 3 giant lions each), while there are 2 or 3 giant tigers per biome that has giant tigers. You can see these things in the raws if you care to look; the relevant values are POPULATION_NUMBER and CLUSTER_SIZE, which define how many groups there are in a region and how many individuals are in a group, respectively.

By contrast, giant mosquitos have between 15 and 30 groups in a biome, giant jumping spiders 10 to 20, and giant anacondas 10 to 25. Each cluster has a roughly equal chance of appearing, so even if you only had those 5 animal types, giant lions and tigers together would still only have a fairly low chance of spawning (less than 27% under ideal circumstances). You've also got other stuff, too, though, and that pushes the chances of the particular species down. Basically, those critters are rare. If you want them to spawn, get rid of other groups by killing or caging all members of them up. It is possible to extinct a species in a given area if you go after them with extreme enough prejudice.

Extinction (and vermin populations) is one of those things I have heard many claims of on the forum, but found preciously little on the wiki or in terms of !!science!! (as opposed to claims).

If you keep capturing or hunting giant lions, DCC, is there a way to prevent them from going extinct eventually? Do they breed in the wild?

What about vermin populations, is it still the case that once you've fished the ocean empty they never come back?

For vermin fish I'm fairly certain that once they run out they are gone, yes.

For the lions (or any other wild creature that can breed) there is technically a way to get around the population limits. this is because wild creatures that are captured and then released are still able to wander off of the edges of the map, therefore "replenishing" the current counter for how many live out in the wilds. What you then need to do is capture a bunch of your particular wild animal and throw them into a pit where they will be able to breed. Do not tame them! This will ruin everything and prevent the method from working. Then after the wild animals have children, capture them and then release them to the outside world again. You can then breed the children when they are grown up and then release them as well, effectively "creating" animals for the outside as the grown-up children add to the population counters.
