How do objects in DF look like in your mind?
« on: April 08, 2012, 09:44:40 pm »

Curious as to what people imagine things to be

I see magma as really hot Kool-Aid
GCS to be gigantic spiders with glowing red eyes
Rocs to be big ass eagles
Elves as yellow haired, long eared hippies
etc.

Instead of speaking strictly about appearances, I think it's fun to figure out what the plants are supposed to be like since description on them is pretty close to nil other than the name. As in: "Exactly what the hell IS a Rope Reed, anyway?" Strawberries are the only thing that's really familiar; even Plump Helmets which are the easiest to figure out are pretty alien.

I always figured a Bloated Tuber is pretty much a potato. Interestingly, that means you'd expect Tuber Beer to be more like Vodka though, doesn't it? Maybe Vodka is like Beer to a dwarf.

I also always imagined Longland Grass as being, essentially, corn. That's from the name (which seems like a generic name an unfamiliar person might use for a field of cornstalks - and corn is technically a type of grass, isn't it?) and also because you can brew it or mill it into flour. Unfortunate that Popgrass is beyond the scope of Dwarven technology.

edit: ...Which I guess would suggest Whip Vine is more like normal, aboveground wheat. It does look kind of whippy, doesn't it?

I like to imagine Bronze Collosi as 50story tall statues with no faces. Just a smooth, featureless head. Sunberries I think would look like Cloudberries, and Silverbarb would be a greying spiked fruit.

I also like to imagine dogs as Springers

The better question woud be, what in Armok's name dose a Plump Helmetman look like? Or how it can even exist?

Hello!

Well, most of the things in DF are natural creatures or common fantasy thingies, so I stick with the main stream there. As for whip vine, the name similarity has led me to think of it as a cousin to that natural barbed wire from Sigil in AD&D 2nd edition's planescape (razorvine, I think it was called).

While some of the more unusual plants are intriguing, I am personally more interested in imagining the buildings and landscapes on a grander scale. You know, imagining what our fortresses really look like from the inside, or maybe what the temples and keeps in the human towns look like; but also what the abandoned shops and houses look like in those towns...

Yours,

DF to minecraft is what I use right before I abandon any fortress so I can see how I shaped the surrounding area. It's usually flat, barren, rocky, and littered with bridges, towers, and pits for bodies. It certainly takes away some of the imagination that goes into picturing the fortress, but my mind tends to fill in the gaps in the blockiness quite well.

Forgotten beasts. 90% of the time hilarious, 10% of the time they keep you up at night if you think too hard about em.

I see GDS as huge fat-tail scorpions.
I see dwarven puzzle boxes as either rubiks cubes or the dwemer puzzle box from morrowind.
weapon racks are like the ones in diablo 2 as are armor racks.
GCS looks like a massive black widow spider.
that poorly built tower looks like a lighthouse.
dwarven roasts appear to be nasty looking beef roast or meatloaf shaped logs of disgusting ingrediants. (mostly tallow, srsly, Im surprised my dorfs haven't die of heart failure yet with all the fat they put down their bottomless gullets.
I see children as horrible little monster, loitering about the food stockpile eating and drinking everything.
and kobolds are the little yapping, baby stealing, cannon fodder, dog people of the old D&D universe.

I imagine bronze colossi as being bronze polygon humanoids.
I imagine elves as pointy eared humans who always wear green hats.
ALWAYS.
I imagine plump helmet men as being purple mushrooms with arms and legs.
Kobolds are small squat brown humanoids with pointy ears and yellow eyes.
Goblins are hunchbacked green ugly elves.
Buzzards are annoying.
Necromancers are cultists with black robes.

I had an above ground garden built in the grounds of my castle and two young dwarves spent time socialising there over the summer and at the end of the summer they were in love. Remember those long summers of your childhood? That first kiss in the gardens while crossbows dwarves shoot goblins above your head? The rain of dead birds as the hunters get to work? Truly Spearhills is a paradise.

Wonderful. Put them in spoilers, though, they're awfully big.

I always see water as some sort of very viscous liquid, and magma as a super-hot non-newtonian version of that liquid.

I imagine...
Sweet pods as overgrown figs
Spore trees as kind of a mushroom with branches that end in little stools instead of leaves.
Giant cave spiders as horse sized tarantulas
Elves as TES bosmer
Crundles as tiny somewhat fat velociraptors with red scales

All I can think of right now ^^
