About bolts

Only leather quivers can carry bolts, and are absolutely necessary for using crossbow dwarfs, right? What is a way to mass produce leather in a renewable way? Which bolts are most effective and how effective are they against clowns?

1. Dogs/Birds
2. Depends on the clown (randomly generated loveliness).

Generally though, they do ok.

Puppy leather is the easiest source, that or kittens, if you can resist butchering them until they're old enough to provide more goodies.

Only in Dwarf Fortress, would such a comment be made...

Traders also offer them, if you didn't bring any livestock cats or dogs with you.

I love the domestic fowl for leather. With up to 15 chicks per clutch, turkeys and chickens can get to a huge population quickly (birdsposion). Much more leather in a few seasons then you can get with cats and dogs, with their limited litter size.

Just make sure you use a bird that will drop leather upon butchering. Guineafowl and ducks are worthless for leather; they don't get big enough to produce a raw skin. Blue peafowl and geese get to full size fastest, and may be the best choice to make sure the chicks drop a raw skin if you start butchering before the chicks grow up.

Just use your military to attack animals, then you get tonnes of leather.

Do animals ever die out? I have badgers on my map so I'm assuming they will keep spawning indefinitely.

Yes and no. They can become extremely rare if no badger is ever allowed to leave the map and "breed" before coming back.

You may want to supplement it with a sealed turkey reactor, or better yet a cave croc farm.

I use the masterwork mod, so when a bunch of antmen attacked they didnt count as smart and got turned into leather.
Normal antmen work the same way too I think.

leather for quivers is pretty easy.  you can have a puppy-splosion.  You can import massive bins of leather cheaply from traders.  you can use the leather/cloth quivers that invaders will bring.

as for bolts, metal ones always.  Silver is best, but any metal that's not adamantine will work well.

Bolts are a good use for that useless zinc.

With modding, maybe.

I meant that as in normal combat and for training.

Right, but you can't make bolts out of zinc without modding. It's not normally a weapon material.

crocs and alligators have huge clutches if you happen to get a female. Just the eggs from a few can feed your whole fort.
but really I think the fastest and most reliable way is imports. If you do adventure mode, you'll notice towns do farming in a big way -- they don't have to worry about dead/missing clutter or FPS death.
