Does anyone know whether it is better to invest research into the end products or intermediate products in a supply chain? The end products tend to have a higher % quality contribution from technology, but would the compounding effect of having higher quality components offset the direct effect of the end product tech?

If you look at a products info page you can see where it get's its quality from.

Take for example steel.

It takes  45% of the iron quality,  15% of the coal quality and 40% of the research in the steel research.

Right, but there is this economies of scale formula too, which if I understand correctly, suggests that if you start with higher quality raw materials, you can make more product from the same amount of material.

Jolly Roger of Davey Jones Inc. Fine Rum and Beer. Or at least it will be fine.. in a couple of months. Oh god there's no money in this is there? Oh well, at least going down in flames will be fun.

So what's the deal with producing water at beverage factories? Not bottled water, just water. It seems like you actually lose water when mass producing it. Is this just for the sake of improving water quality?

You produce Quality 0 water from a well, if you want to up the quality you need to 'filter' it in a beverages factory.  If you look at it straight then it may look like you lose water doing so, but there is a factor called Economy of Scale, where the bigger production orders you do, the less time per unit and components per units are required.

Here is the formula for it if you are interested.

unit cost = 0.5 + 0.5 * (1 + Production_Quantity * Item_Base_Value^0.5 / 10000)^-0.25;

Unit cost is a fraction from 0.5 to 1 and it affects all products and cash cost required to make the product.

Basically I'm too lazy to do the math right now, and was wondering if this kind of stuff has already been calculated. Does anyone have a link to something like this on the economies of scale forum?.

edit: fixed some typos

Not entirely enthused by the tick-based bit, the last tick-based game I've played was Battle Dawn, which was pretty much 'Start, run out of newbie protection the next day and get forcibly vassalized while you were asleep, lose part of your production for basically forever to whoever did so, focus on armybuilding entierly too much just to escape from capturedness'.

How would you guys say it compares to that, and how hard would it be to setup an electronic components (or electronics) company? That sounded like an interesting category in the screenshot. Or perhaps ice cream.

well, in this game they can't vassalize you. your biggest problem will be lack of quality, but with cheap enough prices you can still sell stuff I think.

Holy. Shit.

Just did the calculations for Lemon-lime soda. It takes a lot of work to make stuff in this game.

Quote
333 Lemon-lime = 999 Energy + 999 Water + $50 + 2000 cans + 333 Lemon-lime Concentrate

333 Lemon-lime Conc. = 666 Energy + $66 + 83 Sugar + 133 Lemon + 133 Lime
133 lime = $18 + 13 Energy + 400 Water
133 lemon = $18 + 13 Energy + 400 Water
83 Sugar = 415 Energy + $12 + 41 Sugar cane
41 Sugarcane = 410 Water + 8 Energy + $13

2000 cans = 2 Aluminum + 100 energy + $100
2 Aluminum = $14.00 + 50 energy + 1 Bauxite
2 Bauxite = $16 + 60 energy + 60 Water

SPENT:
Energy: 2345
@$0.10 = $240
Water: 2240
@$0.10 = $221

Cash: $306
Cash if you buy W&E: $767

MADE:
Lemon-lime Soda: $3/can
333 Lemon-lime soda = $999
Minus expenses = $232 per 333 cans
or: approx $700 Profit per 1000 cans.

Wouldn't 333 soda use 333 cans, though? Bit confused at what you ned the other cans for, unless its a quality thing.

Nope. For some reason you need 6 cans for each unit of finished soda.
