You do this so regardless of whether you win the argument or not, you always tell yourself you have won, thereby giving yourself an illusion of self-righteousness and superiority. However, this is only because you are insecure and subconciously have doubts about your beliefs. The psychological shield of winning trivial arguments acts as a barrier, but also a plea for self-assurance.
