Goblin Sieges Bring Cannon Fodder
« on: April 08, 2012, 07:21:24 am »

The basic idea is this: In order to weaken your defenses, goblins send a wave of weak, expendable "troops" at you. These would distract and wound your military and clog up your traps. There are a few categories of cannon fodder they might use, described in order of complexity:

Spoiler: Weak Critters (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Convicts and Prisoners (click to show/hide)

So...what do you think? Too much, even for goblins? Other ideas of goblin cannon fodder? Etc? I'm never very good at this part...

I could definatly see the goblins using convicts and prisoners but they're would need to be a goblin with a whip to keep the rest in line and keep them forward

Yeah, replacing whips from weapons to a sort of tool-weapon, and having a lasher lead a squad of prisoners which would have a high chance of breaking formation and running if the goblin wasn't there to hit them would be cool.

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...

Without such a goblin, they'd likely surrender, like I mentioned. Of course, a nearby axegoblin could step in to pick up the slack...

makes sense to me, but they would need a goblin squad controlling these, if no goblin is nearby they would be running away.

Hmm, seems like a good idea, but I'm not sure if goblins actually have prisoners, because of their ethics. However, this would work equally well for other races, especially humans.

'Course with Dwarf Fortress, the only relevant question is, "How far away will the ASCII gibs splash on landing?"
5 squares per limb, if you raise the north orthoclase bridge before sacrificing one of them so they have a straight shot to the bottom of the chasm.

Kobolds would be a good enemy for them to drive forward.  Perhaps wolves as well.  And these might flee without their leader.

Honestly, I think that goblin raids need more tactical AI.  They should have some objective beyond path to the meeting area and slay whatever is in your path.  Perhaps they should be trying to steal artifacts from your fortress or to slay particular nobles or things like that?

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

I always thought that goblins were coming to dwarven fortresses to kill as many dwarves as possible. Either that, or as an initiation rite into goblin frats.

While it doesn't say specifically whether a race can or cannot have prisoners (However I have seen prisoners in human towns in adventure mode), here's a list of ethics that may be relevant.

Which says if a Goblin General/Ruler WANTED slaves, they'd pop up.
So it could vary from Siege to Siege wether they bring Fodder or not.
