You silently take out your bow and nock it.
As you draw the bow, one of the men glances around and sees you. Just before he can shout, you let loose an arrow and hide back into the brush. The anguished cry of a dying man is heard. The comrades lament him. Then, they start spreading out, looking for who did it...


Mier

Though you can't see the man, you think he is thinking of a way out of this.

"So ... what's the price for this cooperation? What's your angle?"
The man speaks slowly and cautiously.


Thoki

You put your hand into the shadow of the tree. You imagine solid shadow covering your arm. Sure enough, the black adheres to and solidifies into a pool of pure darkness.

It seems solid enough. You tap it. It sounds like a muffled chime.

You try punching the tree.

You feel that 1 power is drained from yourself. You don't feel any pain, but do feel the course bark. The tree now has a new wound. You go ahead and punch the tree again, but you are not drained of any additional power.

You touch the namu. It is warm.

Before you can touch it using the animals, the cat ... speaks.

"Quit it! Don't you know what your situation is like right now?"

The mouse stays unspeaking and redoubles its efforts to get freedom from your hands.

Aile stared at the cat, then facing the mouse with the same confused expression as thoughts crossed her mind as to what the cat meant. It lasted for a good thirty seconds.

"You can speak?!"

Let go of the mouse. Let go of the cat. The latter, in a more dramatic and shocked way.

Ask of what situation I am getting myself into.

[The Fool]

"Hmmm..." Thoki looked at his blackened arm, still in shade of the tree. 'That worked better than expected. It's solid.' He moved his fingers in amazement before lowering his arm again. 'I should get moving before it gets dark out and I can't see.' He started walking further into the wooded area as the arrow had pointed. Maybe it wasn't his best idea, but it was all he had to go on right now.

Head further into the forest, ignoring the path and following the arrow.

There is no chapel in most of the towns. Assuming you are going to the outsider's temple, you head there. It takes just under twenty minutes.


Inser

You buy 10 rations, paying 10 copper coins, and head home for your pack. You load all of your rations into the pack. The raven, still perched on your shoulder, is mostly silent for the trip. It quietly ruffles its feathers every once in a while.


Mier

You stab the unsuspecting man's throat, and relieve him of his rapier. Hot blood spurts from the wound, and the man lets out a gurgled cry of pain before being cut off. He falls.

Expending 1 power, you try to shift the coloring of your skin to be like the forest. However, the camouflage seems to be slightly off... You stand very still.

One man heads towards where you are.

...but doesn't see you standing in the brush and continues on. You make sure to stay hidden until you can't here the men's passage through the brush.

"Yes. The namu can be used as a power focus for you, and can possibly concentrate, or enhance, your power."


Aile

The mouse quickly scurries away into the forest.

The black cat licks its front paw thoroughly before answering.

"Apparently, yes, I can. Not obvious, right?"

You ask what is happening.

"Now, while I don't know as well as my raven friends, I do know that you are ... what should I say? Avatars? Living incarnations of the primal forces of all creation? Personas of each aspect of the world as we know it? No pressure, but if any one of you happen to die, the world may eventually destroy itself. Y'know, because it's like you have three pillars holding up the roof, and if you knock one down things fall apart. Really, no pressure."

He?She? grooms itself a bit, before adding,

"If you don't get out of here soon - and without a good chunk of your namu - you'll find yourself being knocked down."

You head straight the way the arrow is pointing. Not long passes before you stumble out into a clearing, with the sun still shining overhead, and the venerable wooden pole standing in the middle of it. It is colored a dark blue.

"I don't know much about my power. While we go to my namu, would you mind explaining some of its properties to me?"

Mier sighs as he dispells the web of light around the man's head. He checks to be sure he is dead.

Sorry about this, friend.

Mier removes the crossbows from the man's belt, attaching them to his own. He does the same for the sheath of the rapier, and sheaths both it and his dagger. He removes any packs, pouches, and waterskins from the man, examining their contents. He then searches the man's pockets and the inside of his coat, keeping a special eye out for notes, maps, and other pieces of paper. Once finished, he brushes the man's eyes shut, crosses his arms, and lays his corpse down in the shadows beneath a tree.

This completed, Mier sets off for th- no, for his namu.

It can't be coincidence that an armed man is following me less than a day after I woke in that clearing. I need to figure out what exactly the objective of whoever hired him is. I should probably try to move or hide my namu, as well. Whatever that thing is, it's related to my power, and I need to keep it safe until I know what it does.

Thoki stared at the totem as he stepped forward. 'This is it. Another one of the totems that granted me magical powers.' He reached out to the namu with both his hands, one of which was still covered in solid shadows. 'I wonder what would happen if I touched this totem as well?' He touched the namu.
