Advice on Hermit Details?
« on: April 07, 2012, 04:22:27 pm »

So I'm gonna try a hermit challenge, again.  Anything worth noting?

Are you allowing yourself to take animals?

I plan on taking a few dogs, and will be taming whatever the good-aligned biome provides me.  Dwarven civ has been modded to have no ACTIVE_SEASON so I suspect no trade caravans, and a popcap of 0 will help keep migrants away.  Elves and humans will still be available, and goblins are modded to be winter-only.

What thread?

I was just going to suggest making sure that you pack a few cats if you were going to take animals, because otherwise vermin might end up doing a number on any of your food supplies. With a whole fortress pumping out enormous quantities of plump helmets that'd never be a problem, but for a single dwarf with limited time it could be an problem.

If only you were doing this AFTER Minecarts were released.
You could build an entire fort around one dwarf and a huge amount of rails and machines.
And then build a giant Mech, piloted by that dwarf.
That fires Minecarts filled with cats.

Whelp, you could just do a trial run now and go for the real deal when the next version is released. I’m sure you’ll have a better idea of what you want to get out of it by that point.

Wait...so not even a starting 7? Just gonna have 1 dwarf?

That sounds either really difficult or really boring. Not quite sure which.

I'm hoping entertaining, in the micromanagement sense.  It should play a bit more like an RPG instead of an RTS, y'know?

Except... I have to figure out how to get rid of the miscellaneous 6...

Rock pots could solve that. You wouldn't want to risk failing the challenge completely over the death of a cat bring a breeding pair.

Great fun if done right.

Could be both or neither.

Most people starve them, some dwarf em into a army and have them fight something like a yeti.

A cave-in would take care of the problem very quickly.

Probably a series of convenient cave-ins.  Maybe atom-smashing.
