Minecart rollers
« on: April 07, 2012, 07:54:20 am »

Make them need power? make them water-powered? something that makes slight more sense than "magic" please :D

EDIT: Seems that I overead that they are powered in the original dev post. Solved.

The same thing that powers giant sawblade traps.

things requiring power is in the plans, including auto repeating traps needing a power source. Though I'm voting for steam turbines at the magma sea.

Put a mechanism in them. Mechanisms have power.

That's completely different, a dragon is supposed to feel magical, while steam-rollers definitely shouldn't. :) Dwarves shun magic, they're creatures fond of technology, industry (and drinking).

I often struggle to find the reason why we humans haven't thought up mechanisms yet. They can be formed into tons of uses, have unlimited power, and can communicate at a distance without ever being connected (though there is a lag between piece of schist A and stone bridge B).

I mean. We could make phones out of stone mechanisms, and they'd be better than the ones we have now because they don't require power!

From the devlog:

"There are powered "rollers" placed in strips that increase the speed of minecarts in a given direction"

I don't blame you for not seeing this, 2 people in the future of the fortress thread have already missed this one little key word...

You know, personally I interpreted

quite literally.  I believe that rollers will require power.

Dwarves shun magic

The repeating discs kill people without power..
Bridges somehow can get raised just by pulling a lever that isn't even connected to the bridge in any way.
Levers can be connected remotely to anything by putting a gear there and back.
Dwarves use huge chunks of land to teleport magma known as the 'Magma Piston'
Lignite burns forever
The first anvil was never created.
Sponges are the strongest monsters in the game.
Colossi are magical creatures which are made out of metal, METAL.
Aquifers never EVER run out of water.
Oceans can be drained.
A whole river can be stagnated by a bloody baby tooth.
And many more...

I seriously doubt railcarts moving by themselves will be that much of a big deal.

1. Traps irl don't need power
2. The lever is connected to the bridge with mechanisms. How the mechanisms work is a Dorf secret!
3. Mechanisms =/= gears? They could literally just be the components of more interesting machines.
4. Splash! What's magical about displacement?
5. There's a coal fire in china that's been burning for some odd 600 hundred years now...
6. The Dwarf King made the first anvil, everyone knows that!
7. Nope, they're one of the most indestructible creatures. Not strongest. Also not magical.
8. Dwarves aren't the ones using magic though. Otherwise they'd build an army of magical steel colossi!
9. Aquifers work like aquifers.
10. Drain parts of oceans.
11. River stagnation is still mysterious.

Unexplained phenomena and cases of actual magic =/= Dwarfs using magic. They use !!SCIENCE!!

The closest to magic Dwarfs get is with the hax0r metal candy :P

Oh right, a bin made out of one log can fill 10 stone blocks..
One stone block = a wall bigger than a dwarf.
One log = ~half a tree
~10 walls = half a tree.
