Adventure mode hunting (searching for wild animals)
« on: April 07, 2012, 12:41:58 am »

In adventure mode it can take quite a bit of wandering around to find wild animals to fight, either to get meat for food or to train fighting skills.  I'd like to be able to search for animals while doing quick-travel: every time you moved it would check for wild animals using the observer skill, and if any were found it would say "You've found [animals]; stop? (y/n)".  If you answered "yes" it would take you out of quick travel mode and put you down near the animals.  Whether you were searching for animals or not could be toggled like stealth already is.

Even away from villages it often takes me a while of wandering to find animals.

I agree, it takes a long time to find beasts, but generally, I don't think a trip through the wilderness would glimpse me many animals anyway. Maybe, for sake of gameness, Observer could slightly buff the number of animals in a world tile?

I think the chances of finding an animal depend a lot on the region/biome that one is hunting in. Some regions have tons of animals, others seem to be mostly barren. The amount and variety of animals seems to be very random too, so you might wind up with a biome that is comprised of only animals that are too small to be butchered. Also, the whole zoomed out map square that a town inhabits will usually be completely devoid of wild animals, so having to travel more than several hundred tiles away from a townsite to find wild animals is common.

Sneak is your friend when it comes to approaching animals. It, along with swimming and crutch walking, is one of the easiest skills to train. Simply turn it on when you start a new adventurer and and leave it on. Walk to your first few quest caves/bandit camps/whatever, instead of fast traveling, and watch it go up fast. At legendary+ levels you can sneak up to a group of animals/bandits/night creatures, slowly carve up each one undetected by it and its friends, then move on to the next. If you've got good skill with a weapon, you can often get one shot kills on a whole group without them ever noticing you. I've killed titans by simply sneaking up to them and wacking them in the head with a sword long enough to finally chop the darn thing off.
