An adamanite shield, would it actully be feasable?
« on: April 06, 2012, 09:54:35 pm »

I've noticed adamanite threads, and clearly its cloth. So would it actually be able to hold up as a shield? Or would it fall apart as a mace tears it apart?

They're very light, which is nice because it'll make your military dwarves be able to move a little faster. The low weight also means that they'll do almost no damage if a dwarf uses it to bash an enemy.

An adamantine shield won't block attacks any better or worse than any other material (wood, leather, steel ... doesn't matter), so it's probably a good choice to save it for edged weapons, or for armor.

Due to the fact that any one shield can block as well as any other shield, Adamantine is actiualy quite bad as a shield.

Since dwarves can use them as weapons in addition to their main weapon, its often better to use a high-density material such as Bronze for bashing.

Addy shields are like Addy hammers; do nearly no damage, but serve the function they are intended for well (Ie, Hammering "Criminals" or blocking damage, respectively).

If you have any other metals avalable, use them for shields, and save the addy for another axe or sword.

Where is the chemistry
They tried chemistry once.
It created soap.
Dwarves lost interest in chemistry after that.

You have it exactly.

In RL, though, I imagine adamantine as ultra-finely honed carbon fiber. Therefore, a shield of adamantine wouldn't crumble, dent, or anything else - even if you took a sledgehammer to it repeatedly. There would be practically no way for a dwarf, human, goblin or elf to destroy it. I'm not even totally sure how dwarves work the stuff.

People seem to forget that many dwarves, especially new recruits, aren't actually that strong. A suit of Adamantine armor is very lightweight, allowing wearers to move faster and make more attacks. You tend to notice the penalty to speed if you try wearing armor in adventurer mode.

Probably just some blacksmith secret that's embedded in every dwarven mind. Just like the fact dwarves can set up walls impossibly fast, build levers out of a single mechanism, and create atom smashers.

the  material that modern military helmets is constructed of looks like cloth, yet is extremely rigid.

perhaps the dwarves use some sort of resin to bind addy armor to form.

I've always imagined candy shields to have the super sharp edges that cutting weapons made of candy have, too bad they only bash with shields, instead of stabbing enemies :P

I'd imagine that, since complex resin compounds are far beyond our bearded minions, that they work something like this:

# - Candy fiber
= - Metal "form" plating of unstable hammered scrap

###########
#=#=#=#=#=#
###########

The metal is placed as a base which the fibers are woven around in the form of the "wafers", which can then be further woven into eachother for the purpose of armor plates. The scrap isn't vulnerable because anything which could actually pierce the adamantine padding the blows would rip through the entire thing no problem. This allows for adamantine to be incredibly lightweight and flexible, with the armor feeling like little more than slightly heavier clothing to an experienced user.

To anyone using them for the weight...

Might I suggest wood shields? Making all those beds ought to train up a woodcrafter, assuming you don't get a legendary from a random mood.

Personally I use copper for all my masterwork shields, and I'll use any artifact one regardless of material. Love leather ones; only useful thing to come out of leatherworking moods and has been rather common.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
