I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, it is probably related to cats adopting dwarfs while designating areas to be mined ect.

I started a new game, embarking with heaps of turkeys for food, and spent a while designating areas and AFK in the designation menu, and when I un-paused the game for the first time, worms and slugs and other bugs exploded from the area around the wagon. Literally hundreds of them.

What caused all these bugs to spawn? Is it related to the turkeys?

I've never seen anything like this, lol.

Pretty sure it has nothing to do with turkeys, or with cats adopting dwarfs.

Did the bug swarm stay after you played for a few minutes?

I have occasionally (frequently) spooked up bugs and roaches in adventure mode.  It is not unlikely that your dwarfs decided to park the wagon on top of a roach colony.  I have had it happen before but only around 20-30 at most.  Too bad you can't tell your dwarves to pick them up and throw them at things.

You had the misfortune of parking your wagon right on top of a nest of vermin.  Generally you only see "verminspolsions" like that in Adventurer mode (or if you build near a stream/river/ocean and watch it during the spring and fall; thousands of fish will swim by).  Fear not, your turkeys are not the cause of this, just an unfortunate positioning of your wagon.

When I said it may be related to the cats adopting dwarfs I was meaning maybe the game still generates bugs with out checking if the game is paused, similarly to not checking when cats adopt dwarfs. And I figured that maybe the bugs are generated around animals as this is the first time I embarked with 40 turkeys, and the first time I have seen this.
Anywho, I ate most of the turkeys and the bugs all went away, so all is well in my fort :)

They fled home, planning another ambush on your FPS.

I thought one of the new interactions was turkeys digging up bugs in the dirt, no?

This is most likely the cause.
So it WAS the turkeys! You guys all laughed at me, but I showed them! *laughs maniacally*

I had this happen to me as well. It was in a large underground pasture I had dug out of the dirt myself so no bug nests were there. And all I had there were pigs, alpacas, and goats.  No turkeys. It only happened once and I seen it for about a second and it started going away over the next second until they were all gone. I had just changed z-levels to it.

Maybe a very observant dwarf suddenly had a panic attack and was all like "OMG there are bugs EVERYWHERE!" D:

I had this happen too, but in my case it was rats, dozens of them, a hundred. I didn't stop to count, but I had forgotten to bring cats, so my food stores were gone a few minutes after embark.

My guess it's a feature, like a plague of locusts, not a bug.

IT IS PROPHETIC. The next DF version will be so full of bugs that it can't even be played.  :-[
