They only care if the child dies within their fortress.  Dies outside?  Meh.

They'd need to be in cages, and pets cannot be caged.  The [PETVALUE:X] determines how valuable they are to trade.

In the newest version, I think wild animals may be tradable as well.  Perhaps goblins.

In my current community fort, I have successfully traded semi-trained giant animals to the trade caravans.  I don't know if it's possible to trade completely wild animals yet, but trained and tame ones should work fine.

I can safely say that in the new version (34.07) caged prisoners are STILL released when hauling them to the trade depot. Good thought I canceled hauling the goblin zombie to the depot before HE got released.

I have no clue about wild animals, but as you can BUY wild animals from traders, I guess this won't be a problem.

Did you try the trick of having the cage already on the depot through creative construction?

It sounds like we just glazed over a major discovery, can you sell a caged child to the traders with a webbed trap and a garbage zone?

Wow.
You guys are horrible amazing.
I wonder how much the buggers sell for?
Wait.
Does this mean we can sell our Nobles too?

This is a side-effect of dwarven animal training (hit animal with hammer until it forgets that it hates you, then lovingly cuddle it).

They will sell at a petvalue of 1, which will be terribly inexpensive, and in fact the cage will likely cost more.

More importantly, you can sell a child for the value of about 12 years of booze and food.  Just, retroactive costs instead of upfront cash, y'know...

Don't forget replacement clothes. Little bastards. Would raising that price be as simple as adding a Petvalue reflecting the value of a good slave to sentient races?

Uncertain, but it's possible.  No science has been reported on slave trading details.

Go forth and be terrible people!

Take the child, we'll pay you for it!

It'd help getting rid of the whole load of animals I have sitting around waiting to be butchered., which I'm not butchering because I already have overflowing food stockpiles,

Fricken ninja'd :P
This could be very very handy though - a way to dispose of useless dwarves without friends going berserk or ghosts rising up.  Yes...
Doesn't it work to fling them into the cage trap with a bridge?
Or wait, I wonder if that trick for washing elven diplomats off the map works with dwarves also... I wish I was better with at actually performing this !!SCIENCE!! stuff.

More importantly, can you cage and elf in a lead cage, and sell it to the next caravan?

What a waste of a perfectly good Elf Zoo that would be.
