How to stop dwarves from falling to their death
« on: April 06, 2012, 05:44:20 pm »

Notice the chasm with a waterfall at the top. Dwarves like the mist and I've had 5 or 6 fall to their deaths. I've turned off hunting on all dwarves, and set zones for fishing and water gathering. I still can't stop them from hurtling to the bottom and exploding into pieces (often taking good equipment and very necessary skills with them).

I need to stop this. I'm almost resigned to building a wall so they can't get to the mouth by the mist.

Any help would be appreciated.

Alternatively, wall the area off so they can't reach the mist.

Although I would like to say that they're going this way because the water at the point of the falls is shallow, it's 3/7 or lower, and thus "I can walk there".  Traffic restrictions will keep dwarves away, but caravans will still go that route unless you deny physical access.

I'll read up on restricted traffic and build some bridges, see how that goes. I'm really missing the food variety provided by hunters.

Restricted traffic designations won't prevent them from going there if they have no options, but will make it unlikely that they'd go there if they could take a different route instead. You still need to make a bridge.

My current fort has a similar waterfall. Despite putting a bridge there for dwarf use, visitors often go over. I've lost a dwarven liason, several goblins, a few unicorns, and other wildlife to that waterfall. I also toss goblin prisoners into it after stripping all their gear. 20 Z-levels of fun.

You could completely wall over the river with bridges. STINKY BRIDGES

Don't completely block it off, that'd be looking a gift horse in the mouth. Instead prevent access to it by normal means using a walled off enclosure, and drop children in from a level above.

Let them enjoy the soothing waterfall as it gently whisks them off their feet and carries their tiny body along to shatter on the rocks below.

How do I do that? Wall it off, put some floors a z-level up with a hole in the middle to the shallow water below, and some stairs from the exterior? How do I drop things in?

Using burrows and a retractable bridge.

i say build a dam by draining the river under ground then build a raising bridge in the river bed or a few flood gate, maybe have some grates and a hole in the river to catch stuff :P

don't forget to use a flood gate or a raising bridge to stop the water from draining all the time

My fortress is built close by, I can dig to it underground and install the grates there. That way I can access the catch without having my dwarves go outside.

Fortifications would allow the mist to pass through, right? No risk of falling but still happy thoughts.

Don't completely block it off

What are retractable bridges and levers for?
