Just when my dwarves do something incredibly stupid, or something hilarious happens.
I like those lil' bastards.

A kobold.

I always give them a nice ++Sock++

Same with me, though I'm afraid I either give them a nice "diplomats guest room" or an "administering axe" to the skull. I can't let them leave the map with my socks. And if they do - they'll just bring their friends! And I will not bloody my hands with a dozen Kobolds.

When Toady One adds something cool to the game, and increases the awesomeness level of dwarf fortress ever-further beyond that of any other game.

When a critical bug is fixed, or something cool is added, it really shows you how much Toady cares about the community, and his game! I don't see that very much in other games.

I don't see that very much in other games.
There are a few things that separate Toady from other developers and indie authors.

- He has a consistent, solid vision. Many of the mainstream gaming developers have a problem with "developing by committee"; you've got a bunch of talented people in the same room pushing for different things, and that often results in an inconsistent mess. Indie developer visions, on the other hand, often lack the "solid" part, lacking talent or experience.
- Good work ethic. The guy spends a lot of time on this.
- He's able to make a living off it, so he has time to work on it, unlike many indie developers.

I wouldn't say most game designers care less about what they make, or the communities behind their games. But luck, circumstance, and talent are in Toady's corner, which is a good recipe for a good game.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Your fortress has attracted no migrants this season.

Hi!

I guess I have to start out with a slightly negative one, namely that I am happy when the first, unavoidable immigration waves do not push me to 20 or more dwarves (I set pop cap to 7 and would turn off immigration if it were an init option).

One thing I am really happy about are marriages - I quickly get love relationships, but the time they spend courting before the actual marriage is always rather long. So, each couple that finally finds together is a win for me.

Another thing is seeing engravings with alphabet I have not seen on engravings yet. This has good chances of being a new historic event I haven't seen before. But then, depending on the fortress, there are also those engravings that are part of a series. For instance, in one fortress, I had several engravings about various yeti (I think), who fought civ people throughout the ages.

And I have to admit that I am also looking forward to see more grudges as I have thus far had very few of these and have had nearly no chance to witness in depth how they influence the game in the long run.

And, of course, I am really, really happy, when my hospital succeeds in healing the first patient without any mishap or bug intervening :) :) :) :) :)

Yours,

Things in dwarf mode that give you warm fuzzies when they happen.

Mooding dwarf produces a golden hammer/steel battle axe/actually useful weapon.
Mooding dwarf gains Legendary Skill from the mood.
Mooding dwarf gains Legendary in either Weaponsmith or Armorsmith from a mood.
General of the goblin civilization is killed by a weapon trap.
A dragon shows up.  The first entry in the combat log is of one of your elite marksdwarves shooting it in the throat.
Anytime a green glass serrated disc severs a limb from a goblin/troll, spills its guts, or slashes its throat.
Dragon Meat in the stockpile.
Dragon skull totems.
An embark that turns out to be on tons of limestone.  Especially if iron ore is easily found as well.

I like the bad moods, Ive gotten two bad moods in any fort. It seems in my forts the dwarves are either happy or dead. Also rare monsters like dragons, cave dragons and stuff like that is awesome.

When the elven siege comes.
When a noble who made an impossible mandate dies without my assistance.

When something goes terribly, terrrrribly wrong.

I once tried to make a corpse dump into a holding pen in a half evil, half savage embark. I thought that the corpses couldn't reanimate on my precarious 10 z-level high walkway leading to the dumping zone. I was wrong.

Also, when the relationships page tells you that the last two dwarves left alive and fighting side by side are actually married. Check relationships ANY time something cool happens, and it can only get better.

Do the two dwarves that are stuck together after walling themselves off have a grudge against each other? BETTER!
Does that squad of expert marksdwarves worship the same god of death? BETTER!
Are those two married dwarves that just had a kid cousins? BETT-

Eh why not. BETTER!!!

Hi!
And I have to admit that I am also looking forward to see more grudges as I have thus far had very few of these and have had nearly no chance to witness in depth how they influence the game in the long run.

violent ghosts of berserk dwarves will haunt their grudges.  Saw a violent ghost put a grudge in the hospital with crushed ribs.  6 in-game months later, the ghost attacked again him in the hospital, and managed to separate his lower body from the rest of him by about 4 tiles.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.
