I started to get materials together for a Mendel, but it never happened. Was going to make all the things, too. All the things :(

Also, you should probably change the topic to reprappers, reprapers has unfortunate implications.

The statement on their wiki is false. These things are not truly self-replicating, since they can't assemble the parts into a whole. They can just be used to create individual parts for another 3D printer (the name 'reprap' is really stupid, by the way).

I got a makergear mendel all assembled in my garage, but I screwed up the stepper board connection cables. I think there's a gas leak in there or something.

I should have it working, I just need to sit down and solder a few new connectors together and install the right software.

I've got a friend with a makerbot...

He can print custom My Little Ponies from a script.

Also, these suckers are amazing if you ever want custom terrain or models for a tabletop game.  Due to materials cost, they're only about half the price of the stuff you get at your local hobby shop, but that's still something...and yeah customization.  Don't have any experience painting them though.

Get it working PTTG??!

Sowelu - yeah you can pretty much print anything you can conceive of, within reason.
as for custom terrain, that sounds pretty cool, I did see a youtube of minecraft terrain printed once. most printers are limited to 200x200mm though.

this gives me an idea - we could probably print a DF fort with it. would need a heated build plate for large things like that. anyone want to have a go at turning a stone sense or somesuch into an STL?

I'm currently building this thing: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:11836
doing a timelapse vid of the large gear/casing which I'll upload to youtube or something when it's finished.

The coolest stuff for tabletop I've seen printed was an array of walls and doors and rocks and stuff, scaled for a standard tabletop grid.  Interlock them or something, and you can print once, use forever.

you'll have to design these action figures in a CAD program first.

I also highly doubt the thing can print out every single part necessary in the exact form necessary. Of course, if it doesn't assemble the parts together into a whole, where you draw the line for "producing parts" is arbitrary anyway, since even raw materials, individual electronic components, etc. could sort of be called "parts" on some level.

No actually it'll be really hard to make a purely 2-dimensional object.
