I play MTG:O. It's still alive and well. For online play in general, there's the vastly cheaper Duels of the Planeswalkers M12, which I play as well.

MTG:O adheres to the rules more closely and has next to no bugs whatsoever, but is filled to the brim with guys that have no problem throwing down hundreds of dollars at a time to get them the greatest deck money can buy, and these guys are just massive headaches to play against. It's really my biggest gripe with the game that money wins.

DOTP has a streamlined version of the rules that excludes quite alot of things, and there's quite a few bugs as well. So many that you're bound to run into a couple, but the graphics and the interface are WAY WAY better. Plus, while there may be people that exclusively play the top-tier decks (WOTC and Stainless entertainment still haven't wrapped their heads around balancing the game...) all the decks are fun to play and have a chance to win. Plus, there's voice chat if you have a mic. DotP is also way cheaper, costing less than 20$ for the game and all expansions at full price.

There's also single player if you don't want to go online.

What's the M12 for?

It's mean to represent "Core Set 2012" but there are alot of cards from a decade or so ago in the roster.

They stopped expanding M12, and the next game, M13 is going to be released sometime this summer. Hopefully they'll resolve alot of the issues M12 had.

If that's a core set, which "edition" would that be?  Because I pretty much had 4th edition as my "core set" during my heyday.

If I have my counting right, it should be 13th edition. Since it goes tenth edition, then M10, then M11, then M12.

Ice Age - I don't remember exactly which core set was out at the time. (A couple of promo cards for the set were printed before the shift, and thus have the old mana symbol, so I remember it due to useless trivia never leaving my brain.)

I am still somewhat sad that the new +-1/+-1 counter rules has actually nearly crippled my proliferate deck to certain strategies

Which is bad since my proliferate deck already has soo many weaknesses... making me nearly useless against things with counters is just...

Also Ice Age from what I remembered was a horrible set. Though what do you expect...

Though once I get a job I can really beef up my Zombie deck.

Jester's Caps get no lovin' :(

I thought I remembered liking Ice Age, but I'll be damned if I can remember most of what was in it now ...  Icy Manip?  Although, the whole "snow-covered" mechanic was pretty damn stupid, as I recall.

Misc. note:  I have four oversized (8-inch?) MtG cards up on the wall in my office.  Aswan Jaguar, Jester's Cap, Shivan Dragon, and Black Lotus.  After many years, no one has commented on them :(

Hey, I've got most of those buried in moving boxes around here somewhere! Except no Lotus/Cap, and with Chaos Orb and Guay-art Serra Angel.

Ice Age rocked. Orcish Lumberjacks, Jester's Cap, and various other good things were floating around there. Snow-covered stuff would have been better if they'd actually done stuff with it, but it's one of those things Wizards will never touch again. That's actually one of my main complaints with Wizards: They absolutely love printing new mechanics willy-nilly and then dumping 90% of them without doing anything interesting with them.

"We like to keep things simple when introducing mechanics, and save more complex versions for later sets" combined with "We don't like reusing mechanics, because players will get sick of them" makes for a lot of stuff never getting a fair shake. Then, if a set becomes unpopular, you get "We don't want to remind players of a set they disliked, so you'll never see the mechanics again."

I honestly would like to see stuff get printed that has minor mechanical throwbacks to old sets, just to support interesting deck types. Reuse old sub/supertypes like Arcane, Trap, Shrine, Snow, and Curse, for instance. The subtypes won't mess up the current set, but people playing casual/legacy might enjoy having something new that works in their old decks without resorting to Tribal Matters.

My time with M:TG was pretty short.  I started playing during Onslaught I think, just before Scourge came out.  It was like my favorite set because I was obsessed with dragons at the time.  Mirrodin was awesome, I didn't get into Kamigawa for some reason, and Ravnica was pretty cool.  And then I kind of faded out of Magic.  I was vaguely aware that the next set existed, and I heard some stuff about a time warp bringing back old mechanics for awhile, and then next thing I know, I'm arguing about whether indestructible cards can be removed from the game.

It was really fun when I played it though, and I should track down my decks and see if any of my roommates are interested.

There's a few new awesome cards revealed in this video, and it looks nice atleast from the tiny glimpse they're giving.
