She is happy to be free.
« on: April 04, 2012, 09:34:57 pm »

In various version of DF2012, I've had goblin snatchers successfully steal babies twice. On neither occasion did a parent of the baby seem to acquire a bad thought because of this event. Interestingly, I was still able to see the thoughts of the missing babies via the "relationships" screen of a parent, and on both occasions the baby was "happy to be free!"

Working as intended?

Working as intended.  Toady has some interesting easter eggs that are hard to find.

I have a vague recollection that this is because captured children/babies were otherwise getting the "depressed about being confined" thought and throwing tantrums from inside their captors' bags, but I could certainly be wrong.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I recall this being the reason as well.

But let's face it, everything that happens in these forts, I'd be happy to be free as well.

Over-worked parents, excessive drinking, pray to blood god, sacrificing peasants, kills kittens, appetite for Candy ... and people wonder why the babies are happy to be away from all that.

Considering that almost all of my immigrants have multiple goblin and troll kills, and that a high percentage of them also have elf and dwarf kills (and aren't vampires), it appears that the goblins are in the middle of an ultra-intensive humanitarian effort to give a better life to the next generation of dwarves, and that the recipients of this effort are both numerous and enthusiastically grateful.

Really, it makes sense, given how often abducted children rise to power in goblin civs. On the one hand, you have near-certainty of death in some agonizing or humiliating way, and on the other, the possibility of becoming a lord/lady, law-giver, general, etc.

I think the happy to be free though if a feature meant to kick in when you free the child, and never counted on players checking the inside of a goblin's bag

I had a snatcher almost get away. For somereason he stopped to admire a tree or something when he was 2 tiles from the edge of the map. Gave my military time to catch up and kill it. He dropped a sack and a few seconds later, a child climbed out. I looked at the status and it had a happy thought about being free. I guess its about being confined in a sack and getting out of the sack. So if the kid is kidnapped, maybe they let the kid out when they leave the map?

I'd be happy to get out of a fort too!

I mean christ, most of them die in ways that would make you hurl if this game had HD graphics. Do *you* want to be physically torn apart by a daemon?

That would be preferable to having Advanced Rot in every body part.

That it would, that it would... at least getting ripped apart would knock you unconscious quite quickly (shock, blood loss).

Basically this. Depending on your interpretation, the goblins have either explained their humanitarian intentions to the child which is then happy to be freed from a short, brutish life of menial labour and gory death - or they have fed them enough propaganda to convince them that they are better off with the greyskins.
