It does, but it uses the space as a character, so  Jean Arthur would be too long.

Update II: The Big Grind

And so now begins our grind. The plan is to catch five level five spearows, and use them to clear out Viridian Forest and grind experience for Meatshield. There's only one place to catch those spearows, and it's in route 22, to the west of Viridian City, in this patch of grass:

Any further west and we might run into Yella, which we are not prepared for right now. We'll be in these 16 squares for a long time. First, though, I stocked up:

And returning to the long grass, the long hunt for the spearow started. After running into countless Rattatas and Nidorans, A suitable target was found.

I ended up using scratch twice. I wanted to capture the spearow with minimum damage to it, because that would save PP and because healing is a a premium at this point in the game. However, that gave it time to get in two pecks, which left their mark.



I decided to head straight to Viridian forest and start grinding with Xanatos Jr. This would mean that Meatshield would be of a higher level and be more able to weaken further Spearows.

First things first, let's pick up some free stuff.





That trainer there is the only one that needs to be fought to get to Pewter city. He only has a level 9 weedle, but we'll put off fighting him a bit longer.
Now I started the kakuna fighting. Peck is super effective against them, so it only takes three pecks to finish off a level five one and net Meatshield and Xanatos Jr 25 experience. The Kakunas varied between level 4 and level 6, so the experience varied, but it was good going. Ten Kakunas and a Metapod later, Xanatos had only five PP of peck left. I used up all the PP of growl on another Kakuna (so Xanatos would go into struggling after the peck had been used up).


And so we returned to the Spearow field to catch another.



And we return to Viridian forest to assault some more Kakunas.
The spearow just growled twice, so Meatshield emerged from the fight unscathed.
Returning to Viridian forest, and Eleven Kakunas and one metapod later, it was time to replace Warhammer.


The next spearow was capture after using only one scratch, as Meatshield had improved sufficiently for one scratch to take out slightly more than half health.


I decided to get the other two spearows now before grinding Meatshield any further.


Whereas the other spearows took only one pokeball to capture, Jean took three, which was rather annoying. I also used my first potion to heal Meatshield.



And, with three fresh spearows in hand, it was time to travel to Viridian forest and continue grinding.
Bob took down eleven Kakunas and one Metapod.
Jean took down nine Kakunas and two Metapods.
Arthur took down twelve Kakunas, and just brought Meatshield up to level 14. Only two more levels before evolution!
There were a total of three trainers in Viridian forest, each one using bug types, against which the spearows would be super effective. Only one of them was mandatory, but the others would have lots of juicy experience. The spearows each had about 5pp of peck left, which would be useless against Brock. I decided to take out the trainers, starting with the mandatory one.

This guy only had a single level 9 Weedle. Xanatos was the one substituted in after the start.

The weedle poisoned Xanatos, pretty much rendering Xanatos useless after this battle. 49 experience points were netted for Meatshield and Xanatos.
Xanatos fainted on the way to the next trainer.



This trainer was more well-equipped, with two Weedles and a Kakuna. Warhammer was sent out to tackle this lot. He used peck to take down the first Weedle and the Kakuna, but had run out of PP when the second Weedle made an appearance. He recoiled himself to death, leaving the weedle weak enough for Bob to take out with ease, defeating the trainer and netting a total of 130 experience to Meatshield.

The next trainer was a short distance south.

He had a Weedle and a Caterpie, both low level. However, since they were owned by a trainer, they were worth more experience than wild ones. Bob was sent out to dispatch them, and he did so, with ease (though due to my error, I used one of Meatshield's scratches in the process).

I then used the last of the Spearow's pecks to take out additional Kakunas. I managed to take down five of them, resulting in even more experience for Meatshield:


And so, with three spearows left, each with no PP (Bob, Jean and Arthur) and low health, plus one almost untouched Meatshield, we entered Pewter City!

This update took a lot of time and has not a lot of flashy stuff to show off. The focus of it was to get Meatshield up to as high a level as possible. The spearows that fainted (Xanatos Jr and Warhammer) have no further use, and will be gotten rid of shortly. I kept around some of the PP-less spearows because struggle has a significant power, and they might prove useful against Brock.

In Pewter gym, I'm going to skip the optional trainer. Although there would be significant experience gain, it would involve taking down a Diglett and Sandshrew at level 11, which would be too difficult.

The current plan is to go straight for Brock, starting with the remaining spearows. They'll probably die on Brock's Geodude, but they should take a good chunk out of it. Meatshield will then power through the rest. Although there will be a type disadvantage, it will only be on the attack. All of Brock's pokemon's moves are normal-type, which will not get a bonus against Meatshield. Hopefully, by using potions, it will be possible to power through brock.

However, Meatshield is almost up to level 15, and is effectively only one level away from evolution. I might spend a little longer grinding until we have a charmeleon, which should be a lot more durable.

There is also the question of preparing for Cerulean and mt. moon. Mt. Moon I'm going to run all the way through, though I will loot whatever items I can. I'll probably catch a geodude so I have a rock pokemon on hand (those immunities will probably come in handy). I'll also get a couple more fodder pokemon (level 8 spearows are in route 3).

My only opportunity to get an electric pokemon for a very long time is to get a pikachu in Viridian forest. This'll prove useful against water and flying pokemon, which will be very handy in cerulean city. However, they come at low levels and will require a lot of investment to be useful.

Cerulean will prove to be interesting, because it has some very hard mandatory trainer battles - a rival battle followed by nugget bridge. It also has level twelve rattatas able to be caught, which are only two levels away from learning hyper fang, which I will probably take advantage of a lot.

So I need your input for the next update!
-Grind more to get Meatshield to evolve?
-Get more fodder pokemon for Brock to take advantage of tail whips/growls or save money? (pokeballs are 200 pokedollars each, we have slightly under 2000)
-Get a pikachu or not?
-More names for the name bank!

What kind of pokemon do the Nugget Bridge trainers use? Bug and grass-types, right? Meatshield should be able to deal with them, and then we get an Oddish and an Eevee from Bill!

The nugget bridge trainers use a mixture of pokemon, though mostly normal type. They're mostly level 14-15, with a single level 18 Mankey.

The most dangerous one is the rival battle that happens just before nugget bridge. The rival has Lv.17 squirtle, Lv.18 pidgeotto and Lv.15 rattata. He also had a lv.15 abra, but that's not going to be much danger.

Misty's pokemon are level 18 and 21, and so are probably going to be tackled quite a bit later.

Also, we don't get the eevee from Bill in Red. We have to wait until Celadon city.

Right now, healing is really at a premium. Each potion costs 300 pokedollars, and we only have 2195, of which I'll have to use about 1000 for pokeballs. Beating brock will net us about 1300, and also bide which can be sold for about 1000. We have a stock of 4 potions, which will have to be rationed carefully

I'll be starting on the next part shortly. Plans for the next part:
-Capture a couple more spearows to get Meatshield up to level 16 and evolution
-Take out all mandatory trainers between pewter city and mt. moon with meatshield
-Get some more pokemon on route 3, catch a pikachu in Viridian forest, and grind that pikachu up to level 16 (quick attack). The pikachu will be evolved as soon as I can get my hands on a thunder stone.

Longer term plans:
-Go through mt. moon, picking up all items (most importantly water gun tm)
-When arriving at route 4, capture a lv.12 rattata
-teach rattata water gun, and return to mt. moon to take out a couple rock-using trainers (for easy money and experience)
-Proceed to Cerulean city and try to level up rattata to level 14 (hyper fang)

Some TMs will be sold, some will be used. Bide can be used offensively, bit it requires you to take damage. Since healing is very expensive for us, bide effectively costs us a lot of money whenever we try to use it. Selling it, on the other hand, nets us a lot of money.

Update III: Brocking On

And so we start part 3.

Xanatos and Warhammer have fainted. Reving is beyond our means by now, and by the time it's possible it won't be worth it to revive these two, so I stuck them into the computer. We need another two spearows for training. However, Meatshield is now so strong that He'll probably be able to one-hit a level 5 spearow, so we'll use the others we have for softening them up.




Sirus was captured without a problem (though the struggle did more damage than I expected).

Bob fainted softening up this spearow, so Jean stepped in for the pokeball to capture Orb.

And so I deposited Bob and started grinding on Kakunas again.
Sirus took down Twelve Kakunas before running completely out of PP.


And so, as Orb took down Kakuna number nine, Meatshield started to evolve.


And I went straight to pewter gym.



Meatshield has two damaging moves, scratch and ember. According to bulbapedia, they both have the same power and accuracy, and both do half damage against rock types. However, ember has a chance of inflicting burn upon the target. For these major battles, I'm going to give a round-by-round account.

And so Brock was defeated. The biggest cost was in PP - Meatshield used one scratch and eight embers.
And now we go shopping, and go onto Route 3.

This Lass is avoidable. She has two pidgeys, so I'll probbaly tackle her after I have a pikachu

This bug catcher is not avoidable.

I used Meatshield to take out his two caterpies and a weedle with three embers, netting about 350 experience.


This youngster has a rattata and an ekans, and some of the funniest dialogue in this game.


Meatshield used two leers and three scratches to take them out and net another 350 experience.

I can choose to face the lass or the bug catcher. I chose the lass, as she has fewer pokemon (a rattata and a nidoran).


Two leers and three scratches later, I was victorious and topped up Meatshield with a couple of potions.


In order to continue, I had to leave the area and come back later. I took the opportunity to sell bide and buy a few more pokeballs.


This bug catcher is not avoidable. He has a caterpie and a metapod.

The caterpie was taken down by an ember and the metapod was taken down by Orb, with experience shared for Meatshield.

And so, we finally get to a patch of grass in route 3. There are level 8 spearows to be found here. They will be softened up with a struggle from Jean, Arthur or Sirus.
During the search, I accidentally struggled with Jean instead of running, which resulted in Jean dying.
I searched for a long time without finding a level eight one, so I decided to make do with a level seven, which was caught after arthur struggled twice.



I then started looking for a second one.



Johuotar was not caught easily - Arthur and Sirius fell, and I needed to use two pokeballs.
I returned to the Pewter city, deposited the fainted pokemon and went to Viridian Forest. However, I needed to catch another pokemon to soften up the pikachu. The ones I had already would either one-hit it (meatshield) or potentially faint from a low-level thundershock (the spearows). I tried to catch a weedle.


But it was one-shotted.
So I returned to route 3, and searched for a jigglypuff.

Since peck wasn't super effective, I could soften it up without eliminating it.


Unfortunately, the only technique that Toady Two knew was sing. This would mean that I would have to catch the Pikachu with full health (sing would help with that). Each use of sing would have a 55% chance of sending a pokemon to sleep, and would make it easier to catch. I stocked up on pokeballs and headed to Viridan Forest.

I found a pikachu and managed to send it to sleep on the second attempt (it used growl twice, so Toady Two was unharmed). I know pikachus are rather fragile, so I didn't want to risk eliminating it by softening it up with one of the others. I started thowing pokeballs. The second one managed to catch it.




Barbarossa was still asleep, so I found a Kakuna and let Barbarossa wake up during that battle.
Orb only had a few pp of peck left, and was able to take down two Kakunas before running out.
Darvi took down fifteen Kakunas and three metapods before running out.
Johuotar took down eighteen Kakunas and has only a couple peck PP, which will be used for helping to capture a new spearow.
And so I'm calling an end to this update.

This update involved a lot of grinding. There were a lot of trainer battles in the first half, and it was also the first time that Meatsheild saw any action. I had to use a lot of the ember pp, which was painful but unavoidable. The grinding for Barbarossa is similar to the grinding for Meatshield, and it isn't done yet, but I called the update to a close here because of time reasons.

Next update I'll finish grinding Barbarossa to level 16, and then do mt. moon. Most of the trainers in there are avoidable and will be avoided. The ones that aren't will be powered through by Meatshield. Once on the other side, I'll recruit a lvl.12 rattata and use that to take out some of the rock-based trainers with the water gun tm. Hopefully that'll level it up enough to go up two levels, so Hyper fang can be learned.

Suggesting what fossil to choose would require a lot of thinking ahead. I think you should choose at your discretion as I don't really know which will be more useful by the time you get to resurrect them or whether they will be useful at all.

I suggest you just give your filler pokemon numbers for names.

Suggesting what fossil to choose would require a lot of thinking ahead. I think you should choose at your discretion as I don't really know which will be more useful by the time you get to resurrect them or whether they will be useful at all.

Before fighting Lt. Surge, it's possible to go into Diglett cave and capture a level 31 Dugtrio. That dugtrio wil be very useful. not only coming in at a high level but also having some very powerful techniques (such as dig) and being immune to electric attacks. However, rock types have absurdly high defense and are resistant to normal attacks, which will make them useful against some of the normal types that are around during and after nugget bridge.

As for naming the pokemon, I'm currently using the names of people who have posted in this thread whenever I need one and don't have one to hand. When that runs out, I'm going to use random name generators. I'm not fond of just numbering them very much.

Incidentally, there's no limit on how many names one can put forward, or what they can be (other than the length limit).
