The title of the thread gives away the idea of this runthrough, but a few clarification details:

-I'll be running the game on an emulator, and posting screenshots
-Pokemon centres may be entered, but pokemon may not be healed
-No glitches/exploits
-Pokemon may be revived, but only with items

I'll be running a bank of names. Each time I capture a pokemon, I'll give it a name from the name bank. Keep in mind that there is a maximum length of 10 characters.

Red version, starting with Charmander. Player name Blu, rival name Yella. Charmander's name is Meatshield.

If you want to at least give him a chance, I'd go with Bulbasaur or Squirtle. Charmander is suicide on the first gym, and without a pokemon center? Well...

His only two choices are Nidorino(double kick) or getting a butterfree with confusion(which is not a guaranteed win anyway).

So my vote goes for Charmander, because I'm curious on how you'll deal with it.

If I remember correctly, there are no Butterfree in Red version. Again, that's why I picked it.

If ed boy wants a challenge, he might as well get a REAL challenge >:]

And furthermore, according to bulbapedia, Nidorina and Nidorino only get double kick at a low level in yellow. I might have to go for lots of fodder pokemon and tail whip them into oblivion.

Update I: Getting Started

And so we start our pokemon adventure, in the quaint Pallet town!






There's not much to do here, so we might as well head out of town, but suddenly we're accosted by an old man, who forces us to choose which of his pokemon to take! Shall we take Squirtle, who will be able to breeze past the rock types found in the first gym and in Mt. Moon?

Shall we take Bulbasaur, who will be able to breeze past not only the rock types but also the water types in the second gym?

Or shall we take Charmander, who's going to be torn apart by these two?

Of course it's going to be Charmander, to be named Meatshield!
Not soon after we pick up our meatshield are we challenged to a fight by Yella and his squirtle!



And we beat his squirtle with ease!

Which is enough to bring our meatshield to level 6!

And we claim the grand bounty of 175 pokedollars for our efforts.

It also turns out that Meat shield has been healed and had its PP restored! (nothing I can do about that, it happens automatically)

It also looks like we only need 31 more experience to level up again, which shouldn't be hard.
So before we head north, we make a quick stop at home to pick up a certain item from our computer.

Not a short distance into our journey, we find a very nice chap giving away a free potion!

We continue our jouner north, running away from wild pokemon, until we find ourselves in Viridian City!

First things first, there's a hidden item we need to pick up.

There's only one building of interest in Viridian City, and no sooner do we enter it than we have become an errand boy for Oak!


Also, it turns out that there are no potions available in Viridian City, so our healing resources will be very hard to come by

We bring Oak's parcel to Oak, and are given a pokedex, and told to fill it.


And so, armed only with our soon-to-be-useless Meatshield, and 3175 pokedollars, we start our pokemon adventure!

There's nothing much in this update, it's pretty short. The next update will cover a lot of game time, but since it'll be grinding, the update'll be short again. The plan is to buy a bunch of pokeballs at Viridian city, capture four or five spearows at route 22, and use them to grind up Meatshield to a high level on Kakunas. I'll be going for Spearows because at level five they're the most powerful wild  beasties around, and with 35pp for Peck they can take down a lot of Kakunas. If I can get Meatshield to a sufficiently high level, it should be possible to power through Brock (though it will be painful, It's pretty much my only option with no butterfree and no double kick). I may also try to catch a few pokemon to tail whip/growl Brock's in preparation to taking out Meatshield, but that depends on my funds at that point.

Having done some research, it looks like I can get my hands on a caterpie/weedle, but the chance is pretty low (5% per encounter for each), and I'd have to raise them at least 8 levels to get confusion. It'll probably be better to focus on grinding Meatshield.

It's all about resource conservation and efficiency. There are three main resources - money, PP and health. PP is gained via pokeballs (which require money), health is gained via potions (which require money) and money is gained via trainer battles (which consume PP and health).

I'm only going to be grinding for the first part of the game. Once enough of the game opens up, my strategy will revolve around anticipating the trainers and capturing pokemon of the correct type to counter them.

I'm having some troubles with the emulator (Visual boy advance). I was able to play it just fine last time, but now whenever I try to load up any rom files, it gives the message 'Loaded Battery', and then crashes. I'm trying to get it working again, but until I can this run'll have to be on hold.
