He said it was gonna be a monthly fee...

Correction; multiplayer may be a monthly fee, but singleplayer will be a one-time payment.

Here lies the trick. It is obviously going to be a game BASED around being played multiplayer.

I am willing to bet that if this is the case, someone will manage to make pirated servers at some point.

^ Of course! But the question is whether or not it will require modding the client.

Even if it does, I'm guessing someone will do it. There are private servers for quite a few MMOs already, and they require altered clients.

If the demand is high enough, someone will make a private server.

However, for people like me it depends on whether or not I will have to mod the client. If the only way to play on private servers is to mod the client, then I will only play on the official server.

On his to-do list it says he is releasing an emulator for the DCPU soon. I can't wait to get my claws on this :)

Notch has twittered screens of the game.

Looks fairly low res, which would be hopeful for modding.

The last three screenshots look good. Especially that red star and the soldiers.
The concept of the game is pretty ambitious, let's see what comes out

Looks like Noctis.

Makes me happy.

(Although it looks like combat MMO'ness will be a significant part of it. Dont know if that is what I would envision in a game like that...)

The operating system is giving me a Commodore 64 flashback. I wonder if any games will be hidden inside them, like Boulderdash.

There isn't an 'operating system,' you will have to program that yourself. Just assembly. :)

Huh. Looks like a Shores of Hazeron but with more emphasis on the ship and exploration and less of the planetary SimCity/FPS stuff.

Or you could hire someone to make programs. Maybe you can buy some programs on the galaxy-wide program market.

There'll be a ton of open source programs, but you won't need them to just play the game it sounds like. Notch is also looking at getting an existing open source OS going on it which would make it easier for all involved.

Those screen shots don't leave me excited for the game... I know it's a rough prototype but um, MEH.

And I'm also sorry to hear that he is no longer the hard sci fi route, that framework, could have had offer a lot of interesting gameplay and interesting meaningful choices.
