Lighting looks kinda funky, but I guess it doesn't have to shoot for photo-realism.

Of course it also depends on what kind of card he's running on.  But I look forwards to hearing more about the FPS as time goes on.

The problem is that in exchange for a subscription the player tends to expect a minimum level of support.  Minecraft's multiplayer is a buggy, unfinished product made playable through extensive modification.  If Notch running a central server for his game, he discards that crutch.  It's almost impossible to argue that Mojang has the level of finesse and quality assurance required to pull something like this off.

Nobody knows how well they can handle this. We'll just have to wait and see how much their quality increases when it's a coherent project.

I am digging the lack of textures, so long as we can still color the polygons.

That sounds like the kind of retroness this game is going for, and something that will let it run on cheaper graphics cards.

Notch specifically refers to Elite 2. Which I think would look AMAZING with some modern lighting and shading on it.
