I'll just call the game 'Otency'.  Like 'Potency', with a stressed O.

Oh-ex-ten-cee is the obvious pronounciation to me.  The ^ is silent.

He couldn't name it SpaceCraft. That name is already used by a company, and is trademarked: http://gospacecraft.com/?home
Besides, we still know very little about the way the game will work; it will probably bear no resemblance at all the Minecraft. Hell, we don't even know if it's 2D or 3D yet.

As for pronunciation, Notch said it's 'ten to the c' on his twitter stream

Love the concept though, even if it reeks a bit of Derek Smart

Smartest thing said in this thread so far.

And no, that was not a pun.

[/blatantly obvious] It was a rhyme, not a pun 8).[/blatantly obvious]

This game sounds cool.  I hope the multiplayer is not subscribe to play  :(.  That is the only thing I find bad so far.

Edit: So many replies while I was typing!

If you are into math you could also say Vee^6.

I thought minecraft was subpar and overhyped, This game sounds like it might be interesting... but it will probably not be worth it.

Screw what Notch says. I'm calling it Zero Times Ten to the Power of the Speed of Light in a Vacuum until he comes up with a real name.

Which, invariably, equals zero.

Frankly, this sounds like every other ambitious indie space game that's doomed to fall to the wayside under its own huge project size. Having Notch do one just flat-out worries me.

Ohh I am sure Notch will find a way to skimp on it to such a degree it ruins all ambition it once had.

Whatever did happen to the Block based Space minecraft someone was already making? did it already fail?

It's not an equation, it's a computer memory register.

Notch will probably have the same development approach with this as with Minecraft, and that makes me very happy. I've had tons of fun with Minecraft, and I like his approach of experimenting with gameplay in various, almost random directions for a few years before bringing more people in for a phase of stabilisation and bugfixing.

At least this time people know his style, so those buying the game will only have themselves to blame if they're unhappy that the game is "Notchy".

The real computer inside the game is genius, and as far as I know completely unheard of. I imagine you'll need software on it for anything like auto-piloting the ship, and buying those in-game or trading them with friends should be very interesting. Not to mention trying to sell malicious auto-pilot software to your enemies that accelerates them right towards the sun, or simply opens all the pressurization doors (muhaha!).

Here's hoping he explores procedurally generated lifeforms (plants and animals), with low-fi graphics so modders can easily add their own stuff. Java + low-fi makes for an amazing modding environment, as Minecraft has shown.

It's neither. '0x' is the prefix added to a number in code to denote it as being base 16 (hex) as opposed to the default base 10. 10 = 16, c = 12; 16^12, or 0x10^c, is the number of years from the game lore.

Watching this. If Notch can pull it off, this sounds like a simulationist's dream. I'm also vaguely amused by the date of the setting: 281,474,976,712,644 AD. Holy shit.

But I have to wonder, where did the "pay monthly fees" come from? I'm not finding it on the linked website.

Quote from: From the site
The cost of the game is still undecided, but it's likely there will be a monthly fee for joining the Multiverse as we are going to emulate all computers and physics even when players aren't logged in. Single player won't have any recurring fees.

It's under A New Game.

Yep, paragraph 3; though I can see that falling to the wayside quite early on, as people don't want to pay for a subscription, nor will most particularly care about their game running while they aren't playing.
