0x10^c: Notch's Game In Space
« on: April 04, 2012, 05:06:53 am »

Seems there's now info about Notch's rumored space game, with website here: http://0x10c.com/

The website includes a features list which indicates in addition to being a hard sci-fi game, computers will be quite prominent in the game, with the game having its own simulated computer architecture, the DCPU-16, a 16 bit CPU architecture (specs here).

Feature list from website:
Quote from: Features
The game is still very early in development, but here is a list of things we hope to include:

Hard science fiction.
Lots of engineering.
Fully working computer system.
Space battles against the AI or other players.
Abandoned ships full of loot.
Duct tape!
Seamlessly landing on planets.
Advanced economy system.
Random encounters.
Mining, trading, and looting.
Single and multi player connected via the multiverse.
As you can see, it's rather ambitious, to put it mildly. It will be quite interesting to see how this plays out.
One more thing of note:
Quote
The game is still extremely early in development, but like we did with Minecraft, we expect to release it early and let the players help me shape the game as it grows.

Your opening post has too much grammar. Needs less grammar.

This looks pretty amazing. I just hope it doesn't go the way of Minecraft; starting alpha with great ambition and then being released as a massive let down that was outpaced by modders because of Notch's laziness.

I never found Minecraft a massive let-down... and with the shear number of modders and mod projects, one expects them to outpace a small (for a long while one-man) team.

Anyway, posting to follow. So basically a Programming Tutorial, plus Space. Interesting.

Assuming it does reach its stated goals, I'm looking forward to some of the higher-end space battles. The electronic warfare potential is really neat. Particularly as all code above the very basic assembly will be player-created. Which means viruses and backdoors, intentional or no, for all! :D

Everything from crippling or taking control of a ship to broadcasting its location should be possible, given the computers will be running everything on the ship. Be careful whose software you install, hehe.

Before Jeb took the reins, I feel like a single modder could outdo what Notch managed to put out in a similar amount of time.

I think Notch is a great game programmer, but his fire dies out a bit quicker then we would like. I feel like a lot of the stuff he added felt patchwork and almost like mods themselves.

Regardless, I'm looking forward to 0x10^c.

So, this is going to be an MMO sci fi game?

Posting to watch.

I wonder how long it will take until first software for the architecture is written. I bet next month we will already have basic-like "high" language compilers floating around the internet.

Next month? You underestimate programmers. I would give it 2 days from now.
