And a river thames to complete it. I don't think you could fit all of that in one fortress...

The real question is, who's going to be the first to make a scale model of this in Dwarf Fortress?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And of course it wouldn't be complete without a number of ghosts to haunt it.

Well, part of the problem is that I doubt you can link minecarts together, so all of the trains would just be single minecarts.  Unless you were to get the timing perfect somehow so that you have a line of minecarts all moving at the same speed at regular intervals.

You also wouldn't really be able to get "mind the gap" across to your dwarves.

Oh, and the sheer size would be an issue as well.  If you could link several embarks together, it might work, but then you get into that one-tile border between 16x16 embarks, which I'm not sure you can get around.
Someone should probably work out how big it would actually need to be.

A smaller but still challenging subway system like the Boston T:

or the Budapest system:

might be easier than London or New York.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

Begin the age of industrialism.
Well, begin. We already had electricity and just look at the amount of coal us Dwarfs dig up for steel production.

OOh! A London Underground map? Looks like a game of Mornington Crescent! Which rules are we using? I suggest the Bethlehem Variant Rules, and if this is accepted, I move to Shepherd's Bush, for a double score.

A strong opening move, for certain.

Oh wow, that's a hell of a risky strategy. It'll be exciting to see whether or not it pays off.

When my next turn comes around you're all in for it though, so you'd best hope someone pulls off something spectacular to throw my game. I'm a bit rusty but I was a master of Mornington Crescent back at university.

I have but one reaction to the latest devlogs:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'd designed and attempted "Maginot Line" style fortresses before (burrows in individual hillocks, sealed to surface entry except for one Trade burrow, and linked by a subterranean "road"). But the road access was slow and laborious. But with the Grand Underground Railroad....

I had an above ground garden built in the grounds of my castle and two young dwarves spent time socialising there over the summer and at the end of the summer they were in love. Remember those long summers of your childhood? That first kiss in the gardens while crossbows dwarves shoot goblins above your head? The rain of dead birds as the hunters get to work? Truly Spearhills is a paradise.
