if the carts are rideable, then they could be a good armoured-train-style sentry patrolling with high speeds on your walls and field, ridden by legendary marksdwarfs
they would be uncatchable flak machines if run by waterpower

If we could 'burrow' dwarves into them, load it up as a store with ammo, food, drink... we could as you said, having an armoured train shooting enemies. Of course, the minecart would have to have damage factored in so it wasn't ridiculously op, or perhaps the dwarf's lower body is obscured and firing speed is slowed.

Guarded minecarts could be the answer to getting through hostile zombie territory!

Outpost 1: Mainland secured from embark
Outpost xn+1: Every single separated outpost where migrants can run to

And somewhere in between, rails for minecarts to speed through, shooting down zombies along the way, to ferry supplies/migrants to and fro!

Minecarts...

The new and improved way to get Forgotten Beast extract all over your fort.  Your dwarves are snug in their burrows... every last ****ing pet cavy and rabbit is in a pasture... but the minecart will make sure to infect every last hauler in your fortress!

Here's a question noone's asked yet;  What happens if a cart hits something(somedwarf)?  Could be a !!FUN!! little hallway clenser for goblin attackers.

It's like that part of the movie, where the heroes must walk past the narrow walkway surrounded by water...

Does anyone remember those trains that came out of the walls, went around the room a bit, then went back in?

Imagine that the walls are the fortress and the train is a minecart with dwarven archers.

What do you mean, noone has asked that yet? that was the first thing everyone considered and if it was possible to make goblins play "hopper" (or frogger, or whatever the game or one of it's clones was called for you). Wether the minecart would replace the drawbridge as execution method and how (if) you could prevent dwarfs suffering similar accidents, or how to cause them.

Seriously, you know this forum, you know that would be the first thing on our minds. It's shameful to you that you thought we didn't consider it. I'm very disappointed in you, very much so.   ::)

so far only wood and metals are confirmed I think, but it shouldn't be to hard to mod that.
