I wonder how they stop it again.
Knowing dwarves?  Chalk brake disks.

According to the devlog, we will be able to carve tracks in stone floors and stone ramps
Who will push those tough?
Massive deforestation?

We already have power in-game from windmills and waterwheels. Have you ever seen a ski tow? Carts could easily be pulled around using ropes or chains on a continuous loop, so power only needs to be applied at one point on the track.

The downside to this of course is that because carts are clipped to the rope, they will only move as fast as it (maybe dwarf-speed) and no faster. This means no gravity-powered hijinx, but it's the only period-appropriate method of moving carts around that I can think of that doesn't require draft animals. Systems like this are described in De Re Metallica and similar works.

You ever seen a roller coaster? Disconnects at the top and free rolls. Could do this, easily. No need to be connected the entire time.

Will the minecarts shatter the visible light spectrum with their speed? :P

Truly we live in a golden age of dwarfdom.

Also, there is no real reason why dwarves shouldn't be able to make a steam engine. Dwarven steampunk or bust!

I bet they get powered by  pump trolleys, you need 2 dwarves pumping and the pump cart pulls certain amount of weight behind it on other container carts.I hope they also make wagons movable now that they are at this...

1 metal bucket of magma + 1 metal bucket of water + metal barrel + mechanisms + metal pipe sections = steam engine!!

You people surprise me.  "Wah, it'll be windmill powered and that means it'll be slow!"  Have you forgotten about the main use of power?  Pumps?  Do you know how incredibly fast pumps move?  At maximum capacity, they can shift 7/7 water 1,200 times in one day.  That is, if we assume a tile to be a 7 foot cube,

er 7 foot cube is 7x7x7 = 343 ...  or is each square 1.913 feet wide,deep and tall ...

In that case, minecarts should go at approximately Warp 3.

The way I see this, dwarves are about to stop talking to each other altogether and can get away with being completely sealed off.

workshops will be thusly:

Code: [Select]

[ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ]
[ ][+][+][+][+][+][ ]
[ ][+][+][+][+][+][ ]
[ ][+][+][+][+][+][ ]
=======================
[ ][+][+][+][+][+][ ]
[ ][+][+][+][+][+][ ]
[ ][+][+][+][+][+][ ]
[ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ]

the top half can be a workshop, and the bottom half can be living quarters. The minecart shall bring food and supplies once a week, and work materials twice a day, and shall take products thrice a day. Of course, the carts will have to be color-coded based on content, but that's more of an aesthetic aspect than anything. Assuming dwarves can walk over tracks, simply burrow them into their rooms. Assuming they cannot, build a staircase/ramp on either side of the track and link them via personal tunnels.
Also, it's about noon for me, so I guess I can't complain.
