flying critters

MarksDwarfs.

And I mean, rather than use minecarts as intended, and actually keep them safe indoors, I WANT MINECARTS ON SKY RAILS, 50z lvl ABOVE THE GROUND, SURROUNDED BY THE FREAKING BUZZARD APOCALYPSE IN RAINING TROLL BLOOD, RAINING BALLISTA BOLTS, BOULDERS AND DWARFS BECAUSE SCREW YOU SAFETY.

Easy, you just need a storage ring to divert the cart while your fortress is closed.

Now, I want a lot of tracks criss-crossing the landscape in front of my fortress. And then see the goblins trying to get through.

I'm imagining somehow setting up a large number of parallel rows of mine tracks with carts moving back and forth ad infinitum. When the goblins arrive, it's like they're being made to play a twisted game of Frogger with the odds stacked in your favor.

So, will it now be possible to do a proper Thomas the Tank Engine mod?

According to the devlog, we will be able to carve tracks in stone floors and stone ramps
Who will push those tough?
Massive deforestation?

We already have power in-game from windmills and waterwheels. Have you ever seen a ski tow? Carts could easily be pulled around using ropes or chains on a continuous loop, so power only needs to be applied at one point on the track.

The downside to this of course is that because carts are clipped to the rope, they will only move as fast as it (maybe dwarf-speed) and no faster. This means no gravity-powered hijinx, but it's the only period-appropriate method of moving carts around that I can think of that doesn't require draft animals. Systems like this are described in De Re Metallica and similar works.

how about surround your fortress with a track right, like a moat, and put as many carts as you can, AND TURN UP THE SPEED..

If I had to guess, I would suspect that minecarts will be implemented as movable containers that don't really interact with their environment in a physical manner, similar to bins and barrels right now. The alternative using existing mechanics would be to implement them as creatures, similar to wagons.

hmm, if you can get a dwarf to power it in a similar way to pumping, there may be another use for vampires
permanently pumping the train around the paths. course, this is assuming that you can make orders like- stopn at here and here. unload. wait until full load, go to x.
not sure how that stuff will work

Make them all out of lignite or make them hold lignite and set them alight,
If the carts don't interact with the gobbos, the fire sure will >:)

If the speed of minecarts is dependent on how fast the power source is, I atleast hope it's possible to make gear shifts to ratchet up the speed provided you have enough torque (more power) to compensate.

If so, then things will be getting unreasonably fast in the very near future.

Just chuck a waterwheel in an aquifer and connect it to the tracks... ULTIMATE SPEED.

You people surprise me.  "Wah, it'll be windmill powered and that means it'll be slow!"  Have you forgotten about the main use of power?  Pumps?  Do you know how incredibly fast pumps move?  At maximum capacity, they can shift 7/7 water 1,200 times in one day.  That is, if we assume a tile to be a 7 foot cube, that would be 8,400 cubic feet of water in a day, 350 cubic feet per hour, ~6 cubic feet per minute.  That's ~7.48 gallons per cubic foot, for a massive 43.6 gallons of water moved per minute, at maximum capacity.  Or, in perspective, that's a 50 gallon fishtank every minute.

In a normal embark, you can run TWO pumps off a single windmill.  A gentle breeze is all you need to shift some 100 gallons a minute.  If we extrapolate that, then we can only assume that dwarven minecarts will break Mach 6.

NOPE, Minecraft has red stuff which creates power, and music boxes, and minecarts.
