Suicide mission and a legendary battle
« on: April 03, 2012, 04:41:59 pm »

So I rolled a human adventurer this time, and after killing some giants and a vampire frog man lawgiver, the Lord of the Castle decided to send me on a quest to kill a dragon.

Fair enough, I thought. It would have been the toughest foe I'd have faced so far, but I supposed that I would be able to handle it if I approached the reptile with caution, maybe pelt it from afar to cripple it before moving in to close combat.

After a mercifully short walk, maybe half a day away from the fortress, I arrive at the lair. I sneak, and proceed to enter the dragon's cave, giddy with anticipation at the thought of the rare loot.

Yet I find myself confronted by an even more exceedingly rare sight - three dragons living together.

"A family?" I wondered as a I sneakily approached the room they were in. "Man, that damn Castle Lord must really hate my guts".

I ran across several dragon eggs, piled up near a heap of glittering gold coins, belonging to a dwarven civilization, and some dusty skeletons. I immediately swiped one and stored it in my finely crafted sea-otter backpack, it's unnatural heat warming up my inventory.

I pondered for a moment how to approach this immense obstacle, my only weapons being a bronze short sword and some iron arrows I tend to throw at people's faces. I decided my best shot was to aggro the dragons outside, where I would have more room to see through the fire and smoke.

So I do just that, and after a long, deadly dance, avoiding being next to more than one dragon at a time, I manage to bring down two of the beasts, one falling unconscious among the ashes, the other dead due to being violently and repeatedly stabbed in the head, while the third reptile retreats towards the cave, limping and wounded.

So I take a moment to gather my thoughts, and decide to slit the unconscious dragon's throat and leave it to die, and then follow the other dragon. I cut it up in several places and it dies from blood loss. After loud celebratory screams ignored by the lonely forest, I enter the cave and survey the loot, finding only a pair of iron gauntlets worthwhile, aside from some gems and coin. It was a bit of a let down.

After dragging the carcasses to the cave, I take a short three hour nap to rest up. I was not severely wounded, a crushed toe, heavy scarring in a hand and bruised upper body.

So, has anyone else ever encountered dragon families? Could this happen with other megabeasts as well?

Some pictures!

The three kills lined up next to each other. They all weighed roughly the same, and yielded about 250 meat units.

Having an early breakfast outside the lair at the break of dawn by the campfire, dragon steak and eggs, washed down with a nice pint of dragon blood :) . Sure beats the vulture meat I was chowing down on.

As I recall, that tends to happen when there are more beasts than lairs. Quite nice find, too. :3

You must eat their hearts, and their spirits will live on in you, guiding your hand to strike down your foes. And laughing at you when you inevitably die horribly.

You fought 3 dragons at a time? WTF?

Oh wait, I don't remember how strong Dragons are in vanilla. I always mod them to be able to fly, have longer necks (which gives them more reach), and be as strong as fuck.

Ever noticed how some attacks can land more "squarely" than others? This is because of the physical distance between the attacking part (your hand, or sword or mouth even) and the part you want to attack (the enemy's part). Throughout a fight, your bodies move around so this distance changes (if the enemy is on your right, then he won't be able to land a squared attack on your left hand. Also, you will have a hard time landing attacks on, lets say, a giant's head if you are are a dwarf).

If you have a part of a body or a weapon that has more reach (it is bigger or longer) then attacks will land more squarely than if you didn't.

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.
