Lack of Flux?
« on: April 03, 2012, 04:01:10 pm »

Since the new version I've genned about 8 worlds and not a single one has had flux stone anywhere in the entire world... What the hell has happened to my game.

Anyone else had this issue?

Also you may have set the mineral count too high in world gen.

I've had the same problem before.

On the wiki it says:
Quote
There is currently a bug with the site finder tool reporting false positives for Flux stone.
This may be related to the mineral frequency setting in world gen, as setting it too low seems to be correlated with not having much flux. See this bug for more info - http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=2440

Try bumping up the mineral frequency setting?

Ahh, thanks. Didn't see that bug on the tracker.

Mineral frequency is high. random embark to find out i guess.

My current fort has two different types of flux but no ores whatsoever. Buying iron anvils from the human and dwarven caravans and melting it for steel. Not very efficient.

Higher mineral frequencies can lead to ores drowning out flux.

I'm going to put another vote in the column for "too many minerals."  Before, I never worried about even searching for flux, because it was almost always available.  But now I've started doing more changes to the parameters during worldgen, and the last few worlds where I tried to flood myself with ore, sure enough, flux only shows up in a handful of embark locations.  I've even tried a few random embarks just to see if it was still almost everywhere, but just not showing up in the finder.

Nope.  Prospector confirms that my worlds are almost entirely flux-less.  I'd say bump down your minerals and you'll get it back.  Also, I add a lot of volcanoes so that hinders flux as well.  I guess you can't have everything.

Hmm a little bit of flux now...

Lowering ore frequency a little seems to have helped a bit. Strange I've never had the issue before now.. Stealth nerf by Toady perhaps to max our fortresses a little more difficult.

I don't think Toady cares about making it hard, otherwise he would lock us out of worldgen parameters.  I think it just has to do with the complicated system he uses for seeding the layers with "goodies".  If you say you want a lot of metal, there just isn't room for flux.

You could always add [REACTION_CLASS: FLUX] to some other stones in RAWs. Of course, you'll feel less dwarfy forging steel with anything other than genuine CaC03.

Using DFHack/prospect should give you a good estimate of the availability of flux from the embark screen.

Using dfhack prospect has led me to believe the finder simply doesn't list deep flux. I've seen plenty of deep marble where the finder said no flux.

Ive genned about 4 worlds in 34.07 with plenty of flux accurately showing up in the site finder too. Mineral scarcity 2000, and relatively  random elevations everywhere.
