Taming Trolls
« on: April 03, 2012, 03:58:58 pm »

I recently caught 7 war trolls during a seige, and im trying to tame and train them so that I can have war trolls. I tried adding the [PET] and [TRAINABLE] tags to them, but they still don't appear on the tame large animal screen. So has anyone been able to mod them to be tameable?

Didn't Toady fix the problem with animals who have attacked dwarves being impossible to tame?  I suppose that might not apply to actual invaders.

Furthermore, do trolls have any of the relevant [CAN_LEARN] or such tags that define them as sapients?  That might prevent taming them even if they weren't invaders, but I've never tried.  I did read accounts of people taming gremlins though, so it might be possible, at least theoretically.

If you're willing to cheat, I think you can remove the invader flag with Runesmith.  That might let you tame them.

Nah, that's not it. Gorlaks have [CAN_LEARN] too but they can be tamed. And trained if you edit.

They're just too hostile. It's not dissimilar to trying to tame the goblin invaders that led them there. :P

If a wild troll shows up in the dungeons caverns and runs into a cage trap then you could tame and train that one.

Yes, though he added in the danger of things being dangerous when they are only semi-tamed.

Wouldn't the trolls give birth to little trolls later thanks to spores? If you made trolls tameable by dorfs, couldn't you then just tame those ones?

Troll's don't have the [PET] tag, so it's possible that they might need to form relationships before breeding, making them not have children while in your fortress.

Maybe, but they're sentient and part of a civ, so...
Anyhoo, you'd need to pit a male and a female somewhere so that they aren't in cages (critters in cages don't breed). And then the mother might attack the babies...

It's a bit impractical. Do it.

Did you add the tags in your saved game's raw folder, or in the top level raw folder? You have to do it in teh saved game for it to effect the saved game (plus exit and restart DF).

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

Its in my save's raws, but it hasn't changed anything. I think im going to try pitting them together and hoping for babies. Actually, do I have to pit the trolls together, or will having them in seperate pits still let them breed?

They can be anywhere on the map

What I suggest is making a 5x5 room with a chain in the center, put a female troll on that chain. Surround the outer portion of the room (aka not the 3x3 box w/ chain & troll) with cage traps to catch little troll children. Pit the males somewhere else.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, you might want to make it 7x7, cages on the very outside, the 5x5 portion can be drawbridges that can be closed, to allow dwarves to access cages without becoming scared. Then the 3x3 area for the troll, 1x1 for the chain.

Chains won't work, first you won't even be able to chain them. And second, chain are some sort of mind controlling device, not propperly "Chains" and they only work on friendly stuff.

Unless Toady changed something, this is not true. The chain has to be right next to the cage and will work as intended.

Huh, well it was an idea that I've never actually tried before. I just though: "hey, that might work". Quick somebody do science!

Right, time to share a bit of the !!SCIENCE!! ive learned from this. I created the chambers to specifications, with some minor changes. It works the same way though. The first two were easy enough, their cages were right next to the chains and they were transfered without a hitch. But the third one had a tiny flaw. Two of the trolls had the same name. So the dwarf went to the next chamber over to bring that troll instead of the one next to the chain. Oddly, instead of killing him on the spot the troll calmly followed him. With further testing I found that the trolls would calmly follow the person leading them, despite their invader tag. But if the dwarf cancelled mid job the troll would begin killing again. Im not sure if its because of my changes or if they do this normally. The whole program had a bit of a hitch though when I checked the chained trolls and noticed one slightly akward fact. They were all male. Sooo, long story short said trolls are now in my refuse pile, and im going to try again with the fresh batch I caught in my current seige (10 this time).
