Metal blocks
« on: April 03, 2012, 02:49:22 pm »

There is no in-game benefit for using metal blocks, compared to just building constructions using bars of metal. In fact, the blocks are strictly inferior, since they require extra fuel to be made when you don't have access to magma yet, and can't be smelted back to metal if need arises.

I am contemplating using them anyway, strictly for role-playing reasons. Am I alone in this?

If you use them only for some constructions, what's your criteria for choosing between them and the bars?

I'll use them when I want to get fancy, like making my depot out of gold blocks. But not very often. I generally prefer silver or marble so it's white.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

I use blocks many times to keep my stocks separate.  Build a depot out of gold bars, check your stock menu, you'll have 103 bars listed but 100 usable.  Especially for things like steel spires in the courtyard, that can throw off my counts by dozens or hundreds.

There are a couple places that specifically ask for blocks, not bars. Wells for instance. Pumps too.

I use metal blocks for bridges and any "outside architecture" that does not qualify as strictly defensive, like a statue garden or a zoo.

This made me think of something so impractical and so awesome it would be so incredibly dwarfy.

Imagine: Make two walls. Stone, fireproof walls with a row of tiles one wide but as long as the walls in between.

Then fill up that gap with molten metal. Let it cool for a year or so. Remove walls. You now have a cast metal wall.

It would be so badass.

Would be even better if you could engrave/encrust it afterwards. A solid gold wall, engraved with the history of the settlement, dwarfkind and the world they live on. Important details picked out in precious gems.

Ofcourse, this would require being able to turn solids into liquids in controlled substances but in large enough quantities for this kind of thing to work. If that was possible you could theoretically also use molten-metal hoses or traps or whatnot. Goblin invasion? Just one spray with the new Golden Gob-B-Gone and all your problems vanish!

Plus you get some swanky golden statues out of the deal.

It would be so badass.

DF has taught me that would just leave piles of molten metal pollutants on the floor.

My life is a lie.

I think the base value of blocks is higher, and block constructions take less time. So, unless I am mistaken, there is an in game benefit to using blocks over bars.

Hmm. What if we could convince the game to treat the ground and the walls as a gigantic bucket? :P

Hi!

I am a big fan of constructions using blocks in general. And I also like to go for aesthetics (when it is possible for the small fortresses I build). Metal blocks are actually relatively rare for me, though, since I usually use the metal either for equipment or statues. However, when building wells, I always build rings of floor grates (if possible iron or lead) around the walls of the cistern on each level and connect the levels with iron or lead block stairs. This makes it kind of easy to imagine for me...

I've never used metal blocks for anything, but if I did, it would likely only be to do something like use gold blocks to raise the value of a room to very high levels.

For similar reasons, I can't even bring myself to make metal barrels, even when I'm drowning in magnetite.  The wood is infinite, and there is just so, so much more stone.

I would use them for RP reasons though, if there was a call for it.

For the same reason one uses stone blocks instead of just stone.  In my mind metal blocks means its all smooth metal tightly joined together with almost imperceptible seams.  Bars means the dwarfs just attached a bunch of bars as is to whatever is being built.  Both aesthetics I appreciate of course, but one is definitely of higher quality than the other in terms of craftsmanship, skill, and value.

Also for special construction projects like silver wells for ones hospital (silver having antimicrobial properties).
