I defeated the clown car 100% militarily without a single dwarven injury (though I lost a half dozen bears).

Didn't bother colonizing as my FPS was horrible at that point.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I actually once tried to completely wall off the HFS at the borders, to see if I could completely prevent any more clowns from spawning in.  I used modded and completely unfair superdwarves to do it, though, and gave them giant pets made of living flying "duronium" (which is like candy, but with the density of slade) to take care of the demons without having to make the dwarves into military so that they could be masons and work while the pets did the fighting.

It didn't work, the clowns will just spawn in the caverns if you completely block it off, and it's nigh-impossible to actually build a wall where a clown can spawn faster than the clowns will spawn in once you have started blocking off a good chunk of the HFS, even with [SPEED:0]

You also functionally cannot kill all the clowns, since there are populations in the millions of each species of clown, and they come trickling in 2 or so at a time.

If you wall off HFS, and wall off the caverns-- will they spawn at the surface?

He he he.  Yeah, it almost looks done...  alas...  those who are in your teens, hold on until your twenties...  those in your twenties, your thirties...  others, cling to life as you are able...<P>It should be pretty fun though.

I couldn't really get that far, as the FPS was positively atrocious by that point (less than 1 FPS).  (Tens of thousands on the dead creatures list from all the duronium "Moo Moo Cows of Armok" ripping clowns apart.)

However, I did experience oddball things like elk birds spawning in the HFS and on the surface, so I think it's possible that the game will simply keep trying to spawn creatures somewhere until it finds an open tile that can be spawned upon.

Question about HFS, is it possible to kill everything inside it, then live in there?

Or are the spawns infinite?
Ask aussie, he did it.
-snip-

Aussie did it

Actually, there's an infinite number of them, according to the population export.  I imagine this means it's literally impossible to make them extinct, even with ten-thousand years of killing.  Here's a sample from one of my worlds:
Code: [Select]
Underground Animal Populations (Including Undead)
7 magma men
4 magma crabs
11 fire imps
12 fire men
Unnumbered ghosts of flame
Unnumbered green-yellow fiends
Unnumbered haunts of embers
Unnumbered slug fiends
Unnumbered bear monsters
Unnumbered sloth monsters
Unnumbered ceratopsid brutes
Unnumbered eyeless fiends
Unnumbered red demons
Unnumbered tarantula demons
Unnumbered flaming demons
Unnumbered slate gray fiends
Unnumbered eyeless fiends
Unnumbered aquamarine brutes
Unnumbered snail devils
141 fire snakes

Pfft, the idea of 'infinity' is flawed anyway.

Think about it, divide 1 by 3
you get 0.33'
times that by 3 (reversing the last process)
you get 0.99'
Although instead if you use fractions
you get 1/3 and then 1 again.

So, would you rather use fractions? An old and wise thing, or the idea of Infinity, something that is clearly flawed.

I'm going to preempt the inevitable derail into the whole 1 =? 0.999... argument that is likely to follow, and simply state that in this case, "Infinite" clowns simply means the game will never stop spawning them, as it won't bother to ever check how many are left.

Wrong, if the theory of infinity are correct then 0.999 will never end and somewhere to make it one, there will need to be added to it that extra 0.0'1` to finish it off, but that is impossible seeing as it is neverending and infinity will keep it that way, no matter what is added to it it will never be exactly 1.

Cut a sausage in half. Round it up, now you have two sausages.
