WARNING: If you do invest the time it takes to climb DF's learning cliff, you will henceforth be unable to admit it is anything but the most awesome game in the universe because, really, who would waste that much time on anything less? Most other games you are at 100% with several replays after 200 hours. With 200 hours of dwarf fortress under your belt, you might be able to move up from "utter n00b" to just plain old "n00b."

My question now is what are the texture packs?

There is also a great graphics pack that allows you to play with 8x12 pixel tiles/icons in-game, so you get the same tile density, but it looks "graphical".  Quite clever, imho.

It is part of Coaldiamonds DF+, and can be separated out and installed into any current version of DF.

A screenshot of DF+ "graphics" and 34.06

If you need a hand installing it, c32, PM me.  I'll be glad to give you a step by step guide.  Of course, if you prefer the "square" graphics, that's good too!   8)

That looks like vanilla df with graphics mode turned on, honestly :p

Quick glance, didn't see a difference. :p

Try TinyPirate's guide too. It's an older version, but it applies to a lot of stuff in DF2012. Plus, you can learn a lot about the older versions and their glory.

Hello c32!

Welcome to the best game ever and to the rest of your life :) :) :)

Seriously, once you have even taken a sip of it, this game won't let you go. I don't recall the details of how I started as it was a little while ago when dwarf mode was limited to one height level which always had the same row of features (like a river outside, a deep chasm, a river of magma). Although things were a bit more predictable, surviving was actually a bit harder, since some nice features were missing.

Actually, I am not sure how much the Wiki will help you as a complete newbie to the game. As you have probably already noticed, there are a lot of details and mechanisms in this game, and there is no such thing as an official in-game tutorial level. Thus, allow me to give one or two pieces of advice on how to get started in dwarf mode. I myself never moved beyond a casual gamer of DF, but even after an absence, a single sip has re-ignited the flame with ease.

My advice would be as follows:
1. Thoroughly work yourself through the files d_init.txt and init.txt in the data/init directory. Each setting has some kind of explanation attached, and you may want to set graphics mode and so on to your liking. The important settings I strongly recommend are:
d_init.txt:
*[AUTOSAVE:SEASONAL]
*[AUTOSAVE_PAUSE:YES]
These two settings cause the game to pause upon the change of seasons and save. This ensures that the game won't run too far away should you forget to pause it.
*[INITIAL_SAVE:YES]
*[PAUSE_ON_LOAD:YES]
These are similarly helpful. Especially pause on load is important to give you time to get your bearings when you continue a game in progress.
*[TEMPERATURE:NO]
*[WEATHER:NO]
*[INVADERS:NO]
*[ARTIFACTS:NO]
The most important of these is INVADER:NO, because this prevents hostiles from entering your map on the surface (there may still be nasties underground, though). Temperature and weather are a convenience for starters, as freezing and thawing of pools and rivers may cause accidents. However, if you have turned weather off, you should have a brook on your embark lot. Artifacts are a rewarding, often also frustrating extra feature, but until you know how to get all the goods you need, you may want to have them disable.
Personally, I still prefer to play with invaders off, but all the others, I like to have.
*[POPULATION_CAP:7]
As your fortress prospers, more and more immigrants will come. While this is a good thing, it can easily overwhelm you when learning the ropes. The population cap sets an approximate limit with immigration stopping a while after you reach the number given there. And a few waves of immigrants in the beginning can not be avoided. For learning, I recommend this low setting until you understand how your dwarves work :)

Mmmmhhhh, checking through the file, I see that init.txt are more things of personal taste and nothing relevant for making things easier for a starting player.

When choosing a place to embark, I recommend something without an aquifer, with lots of vegetation and a brook as you might need water if a dwarf gets injured. Something that pros tend to frown upon, but which I find very convenient for starters is farming surface plants - that is, plants to grow under the sun, rather than in the caverns. While you can't start with seeds for them, you can easily get seeds from plants you have gathered - this is why I recommend lots of vegetation. Simply build 2x2-sized farm on the surface and regularly check with 'q' whether you have anything you can plant there, and tell them to plant the available things all four seasons long.

Well, it is not much, but I hope this kind of helps.

Yours,
Deathworks

I wouldn't turn off anything but invaders unless you're experiencing a lot of FPS issues. While weather and temp ect... don't have massive impacts on gameplay, they do have impacts.

Invaders off and pop cap management are highly recommended though, as those are two things that drastically alter the pace of fort mode. And default is pretty....rough on newbies.

When I first got the game, I went straight for the wiki, and read every bit of info it could offer.

Although I must admit, it removed the fun from learning the ropes of the game. :(

If you want a little more complexity (and tons of other stuff) check out this download: Masterwork Dwarf Fortress

It has many things for new players, adjustable difficulty, graphics, pre-set worlds and embark profiles, and building guides for everything.

It is also about 3 times as big as normal Dwarf Fortress, with close to 1000 creatures and 60 new buildings ^^

PS: I patched the Dwarf Therapist that has been mentioned, ready to go for 34.07 :)

Everyone's got their own way to learn the game, but trust me this one is fairly solid.

Go to the Dwarf Fortress wiki and click on the Fortress Mode Quickstart Guide. Generate a world (preferably one with easier settings, like plenty of resources, low savagery etc), and select an embark site based on what the guide recommends. Something peaceful with abundant resources, a good place to learn the game.

Then embark (just take the pre-set embark items package, or consult the embarkment guide if you insist) and begin following the steps in the Fortress Mode Quickstart Guide. Once you've made it to the end of that list, you'll have a grasp on the essentials required to be successful at Dwarf Fortress.

With 200 hours of dwarf fortress under your belt, you might be able to move up from "utter newbie" to just plain old "newbie".

Also, this picture may help in some aspects. Or it will mentally scar you. Either way, it will make you a better Bay12er.

The "Your First Fortress" (or whatever the name is now) guide on the wiki was a huge help to me when I started.  I still follow many of its guidelines, though I haven't actually read it in a while.  My biggest recommendation is to just experiment.  Don't worry about losing a fort or twelve; it's unavoidable.  If you still feel overwhelmed, you can change the init settings (switch off invaders, limit your population, etc.), but that's up to you.
For me it was a lot of trial and error.  I'd make an embark and say, This time I'm going to learn how to do x.  Where x is something simple like brewing, farming, or making clothes.  Then if I'm successful and the goblins didn't kill me I'd try something else like building real bedrooms or making a well or getting metalworking up and running.  Then when the fort falls apart or the goblins kill you it's time to try something different.

The wiki was my best friend.
I completely agree with this.

I seem to be in the minority, but I've never used Therapist or texture packs.  Granted, part of the reason is that I now have a Mac, which doesn't support DT, but even when I had a PC I didn't feel it was necessary.  Also, I like the ASCII, probably because I'm used to it; texture packs now just look weird to me.

I tried to get into dwarf fortress twice before it took. First time I saw a reference to it on TV tropes played in adventure mode got confused and gave up, second time saw another reference on TV tropes tried to make a fortress got confused and gave up, the third time I read the Boatmurdered LP became determined to play this game, spent three days reading magmawiki and watching tutorials and it finally took. Entire fortress starved to death before the caravans came but that's besides the point.
