Well somebody did use DF for a college project once. IIRC it was a government class and he based his paper on how DF simulates both communism and capitalism and how the simulations functioned/when they broke from reality/etc. (This was back when the economy still existed in-game!)

You'll have to give me some time to dig it up again (if it even is still on the forums, it might have happened before the forum server move). This was back with version 40d, so that was what, 4-6 years ago?

Found what I was looking for, and then some.
The original thing I was looking for is here. This was the use of DF as a topic for an end of the year paper in Strategic Leadership and Ethics and touched upon several moral dilemmas faced by DF papers.
I did also find this as well. This is an MIT master's thesis in Comparative Media Studies that focuses on DF.
