What on earth happened here?
« on: April 03, 2012, 08:23:46 am »

So I downloaded the new version at last and wanted to have a look at this revamped adventure mode before diving into a new fortress after many months of not touching the game. I genned a small world with a 5-year history then started up a human "hero" in one of the towns.

The town was empty. I wandered all over, but all the shops were abandoned and houses were empty. I wasn't sure if this was because humans were so few and far between in this massive town, or if something terrible had happened. Finally I came upon a temple of some sort and found my first human. A flashing yellow U. I talk to her and it seems she's the leader of this town as well as of the temple. I ask for quests and she laughs at me. I ask her to join me and she laughs harder. I shrug and head down into the underground part of the temple.

This whole area also seems to be empty, though every now and then I get some lag between steps which makes me think there's something alive down here. At the end of a winding hallway I come across two human corpses. That can't be a good sign. I head back to explore the other side and finally, opening a door to a large room, I discover a huge band of goblins. Their chieftess gives me a speech about how amazing she is because one time she killed this one guy, then shoots me in the everything and I die horribly.

At a loss, I head into the legends mode and look for the town. The entire history is only five years, so anything significant should be easy to spot. No battles, no invasions, no wars, nothing. Finally I notice that the "Reputations of Sin" moved there in year 4. Moved there? That can't be the goblins. Goblins don't just "move" to human towns... right?

I look up the Reputations of Sin and sure enough, they're a band of goblin outcasts. They just moved right on in to the temple, it seems, killing the few humans who were already there and escaping notice by the others in the town.

Also in the history of this town is a cyclops moving in and killing almost everyone who lived there (guess that explains why the priestess/mayor is the only one left), and the bride of dusk horror moving in, living there as a farmer for a while, then getting abducted by the dusk horror she's married to.

If all this happens in just five years, what will the world be like when I let the history run for 125 years? 250? Is it always like this or did I just get a crazy one?

By the way, after trying with 5 demigod human adventurers trained up high in throwing, ambushing, and weapons skills, I still haven't managed to beat that stupid chieftess, although I did kill most of her pals.

Hi!

Actually, I am also on the way back to Fortress mode, but I got caught up with Adventure mode. Anyhow, I think I can give you a few hints.

First of all, towns that are consisting only of abandoned houses do occur frequently. However, in the small and medium worlds I have genned to more than 200 years of age, I often find towns that have a city center with working shops, although sometimes the most important shops are empty. The lack of reclaiming shops and houses during history seems to be causing trouble in elder worlds especially.

Secondly, if the town still has a human population, I have often found them huddled together in the fortress at the center of the town - sometimes even if they ought to be inside their still active shops or at the markets.

Third, clerical authorities and other leaders will not give you quests unless you have high enough a reputation. You can gain reputation by slaying a quest critter and then talking to any NPC - you should be able to report your successes, which will then raise your reputation with the civ.

Personally, I suggest that you check out a different town/area until you find one with working shops. Then you can stock up on (minor) armor and decent weaponry.

This world has only a 5-year history - how did everything get abandoned so quickly? Oh, I forgot to mention that the fortress is also abandoned, though it is full of useful equipment. I found a few shops at last, but only full of food. I think I'm gonna give up on this one. I'm still amused by the goblins just moving in to the temple like that. And the bride of a dusk horror... Not important enough to have her own name despite the world's history only being 5 years long, but married to a dusk horror. How did she get there? Why did he have to abduct her to get her back? Where was that cyclops? And where the hell are all the rest of the townspeople? I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS!

Anyway, I think I'll move on to a new place now. I'm tired of getting killed by the same goblin over and over again, especially since I can't even find any soldiers to come help me. I did find one in a neighboring hamlet but he got killed immediately so no use.

Hi!

Names of historical creatures are static in legend mode. So, every creature is listed there with their last and full name. The bride of the husk horror started out as a normal human, was then abducted by the dusk horror and then turned into its monstrous bride. As far as I know, the bride should still retain her original name - at least in adventure mode, I regularly met those with normal seeming names.

In towns with active shops, you will find often several leather shops and food shops, as well as imported goods shops. Woven and leather clothes shops (you can get leather armor in leather clothes shops) can also occur several times. Proper Armor smiths and weapon smiths are very rare, so you often have just one of each per town. They usually stock equipment of iron, copper, or silver. You may get armor and weaponry also at general import shops, but that is a matter of luck.

I recommend Fast Travel inside towns as it is otherwise very difficult to find the shops. On the other hand, Fast Travel crossing the countryside is not recommended as ambushes can regularly get deadly.

You should also try to get to an inhabitated area ASAP since you need a safe place to sleep. If you sleep outside an inhabited house, you will get murdered by bogeymen.

Ah, and hamlets do not have any shops, so you need to reach towns if you want to stock up on equipment.

As far as I can tell, commoners will only give you quests to kill normal civ people, werebeasts, vampires, and brides/bridegrooms. Demons, megabeasts, semimegabeasts and the like are probably given by more powerful quest-givers. But you can find their abode by asking for surroundings.

Also note that traps (except for cage traps) are now activated in adventure mode by default - in my last game, I visited a temple's underground and was lucky to notice a weapon trap before it noticed me.
