Remember to breed selectively. You want the fattest and most muscular crundle possible.

IMO if they are bred in captivity they should be double the size, as they are being well fed and taken care off compared to their savage ancestors that had to live on the scraps of the caverns.

Here's the thing about eggses, you can't step on the eggses. It won't break them but it makes them infertile. But trainers stand in the same square as their charges when they reinforce training. Your trainers are stepping on your eggses.

I build nest box airlocks. This is a 1x4 hallway with a nest box at the end and a door right next to it. Pen zone extends past the door. Lock door. Pen egg layer. Unlock door. Egg layer claims box, re-lock door. No stomped eggs
