If Toady One "fixes" hauling....
« on: April 02, 2012, 08:33:15 pm »

how the h*ll am I going to keep all these dwarfs busy?

I never really thought hauling was broken in the first place, I just thought dwarves had very bad judgement :)

This is a semi-serious question... if hauling is made much more efficient I will have to come up with more absurd tasks to keep everyone from partying!

I thought absurd tasks were what we did with dwarves anyway. The hauling bugs were just part of the allure.  :-\

Periodically drop a few hostile creatures into the locked dining hall/food stockpile; the shiftless dwarves that live through a few seasons will make good soldier material.

Siege cleanup will not take a season now.  Since they won't be hauling away each individual troll fur sock.  ^_^

The efficiency improvement will help FPS too.  Though all those idlers, well, I guess everyone will be smoothing the halls.  Though when I run out...what then?  Deforest the surface!

Things to do for idle dwarves, once hauling no longer requires that each dwarf go out and grab one troll fur sock from that siege that just got decimated.

Quote from: Toady One
The hauling changes have begun. This afternoon there were dwarves running around with bins, bags and barrels, vacuuming up items. Seeing a single dwarf clean up a seed-ridden dining room as a single job is a beautiful thing.

Hence, stuff to do for the idlers, smoothing the halls, deforesting the surface.  Maybe a training room full of catapults and screw pumps.

Small forts may become much more workable now...

Or make everyone into masons and spam out blacks.  Now that they'll get hauled in bins (hopefully) it may become extremely easy to build large constructions.  A small block stockpile near the worksite that gets refilled very quickly.

Wowzers, this is going to be a hell of a change.

Somebody pinch me, today has been going far too well to be real.
Actually don't do that, I will murder your family.

Just thinking about 3 dwarves dashing off with bins to go pick up all those misc. weapons to be melted down has me excited, and one dwarf dashing up to the mason's with a bin and loading up however many blocks a bin can hold.

What next?  Barrels o' sand?

Why not?  Barrel o' sand and a bucket.

Then I could churn out raw green glass for all those idlers to learn about gem cutting and gem settings. :)

I'll have you know that the only appropriate use for a barrel of sand and a bucket is building ☼Dwarven Sandcastles☼.

You'd best have give your Legendary Sandsmith a damn good dining room though, because he's going to be a might upset when the goblins deface kick over his artwork.

That could actually be fun....and sand is an infinite resource.  Sand traps...the dwarf fortress way.

Gobbo McGobbo cancels siege. Buried under sand.
