Ski-jump ramp (minimum +20Z tall) lined with glass rails + Lead/Gold minecart + filled with lead/gold ore or blocks/ingots + tight corridor filled with goblin siege = goblin paste

Behold, the dwarven railgun. CODENAME: STONEHENGE
Note: Be wary of any singular adventurers named Mobius within close proximity of this device. They can and will destroy it with minimal effort.

Alternatively: Replace Lead/Gold with Slade.

When I first read this I thought of a squad of four marksdwarfs enclosed in pillbox style minecarts, two forward and two aft of an armored handcart, being propelled around a closed track outside of a fortress pelting goblin invaders with a steady stream of crossbow bolts.

And then the troll deconstructs one rail and the cart goes flying.

That would be amazing.

Metal ropes called cable will be added.  It will be connected to a powering device like a waterwheel, and used to supply power to carts.  And axles or cable used for repeating traps.

Or you can use dwarf power, which slowly pushes a cart or is used to reset a trap.

Cable will also be used to connect a level to something.

Auto-spike strips anyone? A small line of 10x spikes powered by such a repeater should do nicely enough. Just remember to turn it off before cleaning it.

You can already do those, just assign a useless dwarf to (r) pull.

Er, there's already a metal rope called chain.

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

I'm actually looking forward to the day when things like farming are tougher and require more workers to produce adequate amounts of food.  For a typical fortress like these, I would expect a sizable portion of the populace to be devoted to farming, not just 3-4 people.
We already did that long ago. Edit the plant raws for longer growth times.
And you need larger fields, "just 3-4 people" is not changed.

I suppose chains would work too.  There is a bit of difference between the two though.  A chain might transfer the energy from a gear better, but it's easier to jump the track with one.  Like a bike chain coming off.  Cables are smoother and don't have to be positioned exactly correct to work, and are easier to bend around corners without coming off, but need more tension on the cable to transfer energy from a pulley to the cable.

Not that I'd expect it to be that realistic, at least for some time yet.  But cables are more common in machines than chains.

Step 1) Build ramp
Step 2) Build tracks on ramp
Step 3) Fill minecart with steel bolts
Step 4) Push minecart down ramp
Step 5) ???
Step 6) Profit

In a fat-fingered moment while setting up another military squad I accidentally created a captain of the guard rather than a militia captain.  His squad of near-legendary hammerdwarves equipped with high quality silver hammers then took it upon themselves to dispense justice to all the mandate breakers in the fortress.  It was quite messy.

I wish Toady made ores and stones absurdly heavy and slow to carry if mining carts are added.

I can see draft animals being more than just tight-packed storage of *roasts* and -bone bolts-

Use them to tow your minecarts!
