hunting/war birds flying

about a previous version I remembered that trained birds would lose their flight ability, making them mostly useless. I think the discussion was about rocs. Is this still the case?

how do get birds into a cage trap in the first place?

I know that if you force them underground through a 1 z-level high corridor with cage traps they won't be able to fly, stay at ground level and get trapped, but how do you get them from the edge of the map to a corridor when they can simply fly up?

I mean wih ground animals you can build walls all around your map and they'll go through your corridors in order to stop running around in circles around the edge of your map and go to the center of it, but a flyer.... can just... fly... do they spwan at ground level too? do you build a floor ring over all the edge to direct them down?

If the original thread was dealing with rocs then it wouldn't be a problem to get them to come into your fortress since they are megabeasts.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

I have captured birds by having traps near my fort aboveground accesses. I now have a couple species... One of which just layed eggs. I think as long as they are in the same z-level as the trap, they will fall to it anyway. (proven with weapon traps on the surface)

I have managed to catch birds by simply building cage traps on the ground outside.  It's not very reliable, but they will sometimes wander into a trap placed on the ground.

Er, the original question had nothing to do with trapping birds - it had to do with them losing the desire to fly once you trained them...

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

this

also, quite a few birds now have dive hunting for vermin and happily dive into cage traps

I wanted to give people pet peregrin falcons that would follow them around and kill vermin, and to distract goblins, but if they don't fly that's not going to work well.

I have a trained giant raven that can still fly.  He doesn't fly very far, but he can fly up to a ledge a z level above without taking the stairs.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

I am beginning to think female warbirds will not hatch eggs, but still lay them. Their loyalty is to their trainer, or owner, not the clutch. Possibly its the same for any egg laying creature. As was mentioned earlier, tame birds will still fly, but hanging around dwarven sots has made them lazy. Any building near a meeting area, or a zoo they will perch as high as they can. Possibly !!SCIENCE!! is needed to get them to perch in areas were they can detect thieves and ambushers.

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.
