Surprize for elves
« on: April 01, 2012, 03:47:47 pm »

So... I've started this game in a on an aquifer (was fun digging trough it) good-calm biom... Now - it is boring, so I am planing to bring fun to a higher level.
Any enemy that happens to come to lvl3 cavern gets killed, any poor elephant that stumbles to the outside gets killed. No goblins! No wars - only occasional vampire (that imediately gets recruited to the vamp squad) and were-hyenas from time to time. It is boring...
So, now I am planing a surprize party for elves when they aprear in spring :)
I've constructed a special room with depo access just for them, that can be sealed with floodgates. Also there is a pit next to it which walls can be lowered - yes you guessed it right - filled with presents  ;D
So far I've captured dozen unicorns, few elephants, lava man and a cave crawler... Now I am thinking - is it safe for me to just dump them from 1lvl above the pit? Are they going to escape? I know every time I try to move unicorns they escape. I would not like for that to happen to me with let's say a cave crawler...
Is there some other way except for linking them to a lever? (it would take a lot of mechanisms and time).

You say that like it's a bad thing.

well... if I am supposed to link cage by cage with a lever, it would take some time... i thought about some quicker way... do cave crawlers and elephants escape when I move them from one cage to another?

you could pit/them or release them ahead of time and then when the elves come give them access to the elves.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Thanks...
well - that was something i'm planing to do. Got all flood gates ready and linked to levers. Now only thing that is still on my mind is how to most effectively release them ahead of time into that pit.

Drawbridge - airlock the pitting room (and maybe trap it as well) to make sure you dont loose any elf-presents.
But as for a quick and easy way to ensure no esacapees? I don't know.

Thanks anyway... I've decided after all not to risk any loose cave cravlers to link separate cages to one lever and then to deliver some nice presents.
Oh, yes, I've almost forgot, in case they suceed in killing all my presents, I'll pump in 7/7 water, and after few minutes I'll pull the drain :)

Well, mass-pitting should work fine for the animals. (I think)

Well some people might think that tall, immortal-ish, pointy eared, hermephoditic men, who get angry at buying wood yet charge you an arm and a leg for their crafts is funny, Though they are probably an elf, they have no sense humor or !!FUN!!

It's their fault for carrying so much pointless and flammable equipment.

There is only one solution. Fortunately, the OP has a caged lava man. That will solve any and all elf-related problems. It has a range of 15 tiles in fireball mode and a body temperature high enough to purify an area of all hippie residue just by standing there. The best use for them is to trap them behind an impassable pit like you would a necromancer for mass-zombification.

L _ D XXeXX

L = lava man trapped in 1x1 cubbyhole
_ = impassable pit with cage trap on bottom
D = lever-operated door or bridge
XXeXX = burning elf

Due to the high temperature, it's probably best to handle this one with levers and a built cage.

Other creatures can be positioned with (mass) pitting, which is described in detail on the wiki and requires hatch covers to handle hostiles without startling dwarves.

Tsk, all this waste. You're missing out on perfectly good shipments of massive, fanged pets.

well, if he can get the elves to siege him they'll bring along plenty of massive fanged pets anyways, right? :)
