34.07 Berserk Child - Clothing & Confusion
« on: April 01, 2012, 01:44:24 pm »

I thought unhappy thoughts in children from lack of clothing wasn't supposed to happen now?  I generated this world in 34.07 and am playing the fortress in 34.07.  A few babies grew up.  One started throwing tantrums because of no clothing.  I had a little goblin clothing and I started making shoes, trousers, and shirts, but the tantruming child has gone berserk now.  Two more show as unhappy, and one very unhappy, due to embarrasment over lack of covering.  They have the other required clothing.  These children are only one year old.  The only other thing wrong with their lives is no dining room, and they have happy thoughts about the well, the food, the beds, and their parent.

Is anyone else seeing this sort of thing in 34.07?

Well now they have enjoyed a "fantastic dining room", but the lack of trousers has driven the unhappy one into misery and the two unhappy ones to be very unhappy.

Well there's only one thing for it then.

Find out how miserable they are with broken legs.

Well now a second one has gone berserk, after first destroying its shoes and shirt during tantrums.   >:(

So yes, I try to keep about 10 of each item ready. It's hard to figure out and I cant figure the workflow thing from hack, But I HAVE found that setting it ridiculously low and asking from time to time workflow list, I'll see if stocks of useable clothing is getting low.

The point is, 34.07 was supposed to not have unhappiness in children from lack of clothing.  I didn't mind making clothing in advance for them, but we were not supposed to have to do so with this version.

Under Major bug fixes:

(*) Removed negative clothing thoughts for children

I had this issue today with 34.07(it was a 34.06 savegame though if that matters) he tantrum'd a few times, each time he "attend meeting" with the mayor and all is well, for now...

But yeah i thought this issue was supposed to be gone /shrug. The child i had in my .06 fort(the reason i moved it to .07) lost her unhappy thoughts about clothing.

Yeah, the problem was that babies don't pick up clothing (and don't get clothing unhappy thoughts) but children do get the thoughts, so upon becoming children at age 2 they'd immediately die of embarrassment due to not wearing anything, without any time in between to grab the clothing they need.  Stopping children from having the clothing unhappy thoughts would give them enough time to grab clothing before they grow up and start getting embarrassed.

Yesterday I updated from 34.05 to 34.07 and now every other child have "old clothing" or "uncovered" or "no shoes" bad thought.
I have ~40 children in my fort.
And they're throwing tantrums and make unhappy all other adult people.

Step 1) Murder a batch of immigrants
Step 2) Unforbid their clothing
Step 3) ???
Step 4) Profit

In a fat-fingered moment while setting up another military squad I accidentally created a captain of the guard rather than a militia captain.  His squad of near-legendary hammerdwarves equipped with high quality silver hammers then took it upon themselves to dispense justice to all the mandate breakers in the fortress.  It was quite messy.

Sounds like a bug. File a bug report.

I'd mention it in the announcement thread too, since it directly relates to the update.
I know Toady reads those.

Goblinite clothing [mud covering] [goblin blood covering] [vomit covering] for everybody! \o/

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.
