This is my cycle:

Before the first siege:

Weapons trap with five wood menacing spikes each -> kill many goblins.

After the first siege...

Weapons trap with five or more goblins weapons -> kill many more goblins.

In a few years you will can swim in goblinite  ;D Curiosly, the word "siege" is similar to the spanish word "siega", that mean, harvest   :P

bronze/copper/glass/wood menacing spikes can shred goblins because goblins don't believe in pants.

This. Fifty retracting copper spikes on repeat will demolish nearly anything. Glass disks are quite nasty. Put them in a pressure plate automated goblin shredder and sieges take care of themselves with little intervention.

And if you don't have any of this stuff, you still have gravity. Drop pits are your friend. And if you can't do that for whatever reason, you can always turtle. Here's another little tip: volcanoes will almost always lack at least one major component of steel-making. Unless you can find a volcano next to sedimentary stone, for instance, you will not get any coal. Iron is far more common in sedimentary stone than in igneous stone. And marble is the only flux that will appear in igneous stone.

Lack of iron on a volcano shouldn't baffle you. That's normal. Having everything you need to make steel on a volcano should baffle you. I never embark on volcanoes. I don't really understand people's fascination with them. The magma sea is never that far down.

-150 z levels isn't that far down?

Also, mining candy doesn't really carry any risk at all. Just smooth and carve fortifications into it until you find the tube. You can still mine those squares for candy, the clowns can't get you unless your dwarves hang around the other side of the fortification to get nasty stuff breathed on them, and the entire tube is revealed so you can mine everything surrounding it easily.

Goblinmas

How does that work with no way to kill them except by flinging them into the magma with my bridges (which would make retrieval of their gear rather difficult)

1. Bronze.
2. Copper.
3. Crank out crafts, buy from caravan.
4. Kill gobbos for more.

if you have straight up down stair wells, it really isn't tooo bad (put a burrow down there for your metalsmiths, with some food stockpiles and elite bedrooms for the dwarfs who work with Armoks holy blood), also magma pistons are completely doable by season 1-2. Setting number of caverns too 1, lots of people like this, puts the magma sea at lvlls -10-15 ish. Just the first cavern is full of deadly beasties so you have to be more carefull of breaching/living in it.

5 words: Large Serrated Green Glass Discs. With a magma glass furnace, sand, and a few bags, you can make nything out of GG. Once, i sealed the caldera using GG blocks.

Stop being a elf. Make bone armour and obsidian swords like a boss.

My personal text is in itself a attempt to be witty, making fun of the fact that peoples personal text usually are trying to make a witty one liner. Possibly a reference to the game or just a generally humorous. You may also find that this signature is not used to regurgitate someone else's joke in a attempt to immortalize that they felt but instead have just joined a crowd of people who are to hung onto past feeling, but is used to better explain the personal text.

Copper crossbows and silver warhammers for everyone. If you really need steel/iron, the goblins will bring some.

Back in my day, we din' use elfy things like cage traps an' we were too POOR to have weapons and armor. An' we lived in a DESERT, so we din' have wood like an elf anyhow. The drill sergeant said "Here's your leather cap an' leather shield. You'll get a weapon when you take one from a goblin. Now here's "Teeth" Tirist  come to show you little runts how to BITE!"

Grab what you can from the caravans and start building up a respectable supply of Bronze as your main high quality gear source. Silver warhammers are still easy to get since Tetrahedrite seems so abundant, and Copper is second best for blunt weapons. Trade for all the cheap cages that you can get, they yield 1 bar each. Don't go crazy on smelting down iron and steel gear that you import since the return is usually shitty, even if you make Masterwork out of it.

Bone crossbow and bone bolts, ten per trap: useless against armour, but there always is some soft spot to be hit and at 10 shot per trap it get quite easy to painstun goblins.

Send the militia to choke them afterward.
