No iron, what do
« on: April 01, 2012, 12:58:26 pm »

So after doing a quick romp with DF Hack -> Reveal -> Prospect, my volcano fortress killcano has zero iron ore which completely baffles me. I really need to start up a military soon because I just had my first ambush and got lucky that I was able to seal my fort up, magmafy two kobolds, and a dorf caravan guard killed another. But, with no iron, I can't make the best quality weapons or armor. Checking for candy revealed only a few dozen ores of it, too risky to mine out. I had a few metal items that I designated for Melting on the stocks screen, but they've just sat around forever.

So yeah I'm kinda at a loss. Should I just crank out a crapload of broken, over-expensive food items and just trade for weapons and armor next year's caravan? Or is there a better way? Or hell even a way to force iron to spawn on the map.

Buy up metal items and melt them, that's about all you can do.

If they are not melting items, make sure you have a furnace operator and a working furnace with Melt objects (R).

You need Goblinmas or iron/steel caravan junk for your masterwork steel needs.

As for melting, the checklist is:
  • Do I have fuel (coke or charcoal) available?
  • Have I marked anything for melting?
  • Have I set the smelter to "Melt an object" (possibly on [r]epeat)?
  • Do I have a Furnace Operator?

Goblinmas

How does that work with no way to kill them except by flinging them into the magma with my bridges (which would make retrieval of their gear rather difficult)

Crank out LOTS of goods, train up a bunch of smiths on what metal you have (if you have tetrahedrite, which you probably do, you have copper galore), request maximum priority on everything made of iron and steel from the caravan, buy it, and melt it down so you can make better ones. Just... don't go crazy on the crafts unless you're swimming in dwarfbucks, they give you a TERRIBLE metal return.

Iron and steel metal are both magma-safe. What you can do is make a magma trap where the magma can be drained, allowing for the retrieval of goblinite. I recommend a 2-wide corridor made of floor grates. Seal the corridor, force pressurized magma up through the floor grates, then open a drain floodgate under the grates.

Do NOT underestimate the "inferior" metals. Silver warhammers, copper shields and so on. Since magma is not a problem, you can forge simpler armour until the goblinite reserves can be havrested.

Silver and Bronze make great blunt weapons, start with those

I'm surprsied no one pulled an April Fool's on him and told him to dig into hell or whatever.

That said, dig into hell.

That said, dig into hell.

Dig almost to Cricus, mine the candy. Laugh at the puny goblins.
Iron is for cheapskates and greenskins.

Serious advice is serious, but my complete (and admittedly suicidal) lack of fear when mining candy is one of my more esoteric overseer traits.

copper is actually pretty decent as blunt weapon too and if you got sand, glass serrated discs will help a lot. If you have easy available magma, that is a great combination. No sand and the traders don't bring enough metals? well, they also bring sand. If you can lure enemies in a largish room with upright spear traps, well, pretty much any menacing spike will do damage. Again, copper is fine, glass will do, wooden in an emergency, but do not use training spears.

bronze/copper/glass/wood menacing spikes can shred goblins because goblins don't believe in pants.

That said, dig into hell.

Fully decked out elven militia, Highwood hammers and helmets with rope reed fiber everything else ftw.

Actually if you trapped all the goblinite and pitted them without their weapons, you would have no problem with an elven militia confiscating all those illegal metal goods. (because metal is of course used to harm nature and all)
