The best armor for a dwarf
« on: April 01, 2012, 06:25:36 am »

Unfortunately, I did not have enough materials yet for the crossbow to be elf bone as well, or to decorate the leather with elf bone and elf ivory, but alas, maybe next season.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

Raw modding.

I'm willing to bet he has elf fat roasts in his food stockpile.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I've thought of a way to try: if you embark unto a night creature lair, it might have some butchering products from nearby civilized creatures, and that might include an elf skin. I think your tanners would tan it gladly. Bones you can make by dropping elves from a tower, or find in NC lair too.

If we are modding the raws, then slade armour = best armour mat without changing the materials strength properties.

That would also make the dorfs immobile.

Actually they would move too slowly to fight effectively and armor doesn't protect you from wrestling.

nor supersonic bolts OR whips.
remember, it doesn't matter if it's steel or copper or gold.
Whips and bolts will kill your dorfs, coupled with legendary crossbowers and whipmasters.
Only magma is 100% safe against those two weapons...and only 99.99% of the time.

Put a turn in your fortress entrance that disables the advantage of range for crossbows/bows, and that is no longer a problem. It is STILL more protective than adamantine.

I used to use slade armour all the time in the arena back when you could use it, and I remember Dwarves could move just fine in it.

Set Ethics to butchering sapients (their corpses) and make sapient trophies, BAM. Anything you can do with a cat, you can do with an elf. It's in default entity i believe.

Yup, this.  Just set the ethics for eating sapients to ACCEPTABLE, and then set up butcher shops near where the elves will die (or a refuse stockpile in a safe place), and they will happily chop them up and use them for crafts.

I have yet to convince them to siege me, but whenever merchants come by, i just drop them and their yaks into a 10 z level pit as they leave (after offering them lots of wooden goods decorated with elf bone), which causes their bodies to explode into convenient butcherable pieces upon impact.  I then forbid everything else lying around, and open the door to the adjacent butcher shop and tannery line at the bottom of the pit.  Dwarfs go to work processing the merchants right where they lay.  Then I close up the gate and lower a large drawbridge over the entire bottom area of the pit, atom-smashing all of their tainted, evil elf trade goods and undesirable yak bits (and helping my FPS from dying).

They have a lot of bones!  Since the OP I have also gotten them to make me an artifact elf bone table and chair, suitable furniture for a baroness.

I did that, but mostly to make goblin bone bolts.

"wanna know what happened to the last guys to siege us? here they are, in your face man!"
