failed armorsmith mood imminent

1. armor mood by (rusty) armorsmith dwarf.
2. as he heads to the forge, i forbid all the bars near him except for the steel
3. he claims the workshop, does not grab any material
4. I unforbid all bars, he doesn't go for any material.
5. He's asking for leather and shining bars of metal.  Both are accessible and unforbidden, and in large-ish quantities.
6. I have no burrows defined, forge blocks/anvil are unforbidden.

any ideas?  I'm playing vanilla .06

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

had the same issue some time ago. Maybe he wants special bars? do you use dfhack? if so, try showmood.

Does your armorsmith have a 'like' for a particular type of metal?

Oh yeah, forgot to check his preferences.  Idiot is a huge fan of pig iron apparently.
