Goblin Prisoners
« on: April 01, 2012, 02:17:48 am »

Alright, So I just had my first siege. I managed to take the majority of them as prisoners, my question is, What can I do with them?

I have already disarmed them except for their armor. I am considering feeding them to my minotaur, but is there any way they can benefit me?

Create an execution room and have your soldiers kill them one at a time.  It's a good way to train your military without resorting to danger rooms.

Execution room:  Put a lever outside the room.  Put some goblin-filled cages inside the room.  (Your goblin cages are in your animal stockpile, right?)  So, your execution room... build (b) --> a cage (j) inside that room.  Pick a material (zinc, copper, etc) that you know has a caged goblin in it.

Go to the lever, attach the lever to one of the goblin-occupied cages  (a) --> (j).  You'll need a mechanic and some mechanisms for this.

When done, put some military dwarves in there (a melee squad and an xbow squad is best, imo) and have a civilian pull the lever (P).  If you're worried about the goblin escaping, have some war dogs chained outside, some weapon traps outside, or just lock the doors.

Alternativly, if magma is available, sacrifice them to the forge gods!

alternatively you can press x before choosing the cage and see exactly which cage has a goblin in it.

I tend to use goblins for archery training

I created a zoo for interested citizens. I mean, how often do dwarves get to see a goblin or troll up close and not get stabbed/killed/maimed? It's a great educational experience, and the children seem to love it.

on .31.25, I had a room filled with goblin POWs, and moose/badger people. Dwarves seemed to prefer throwing parties there more than anywhere else.

Alternatively to the execution room, you can drop prisoners through a hatch into a battle room. Haulers won't flip out and drop the prisoner this way, which would cause him to maul everyone.

Make a big pit, a few z-levels deep and lined with glass block walls. Pit all goblin prisioners, after being stripped of all clothes and gear, into said pit. The goblins will get hurt, but won't die. Add all of their critters, after the trolls and such have also been stripped. Also add in all other creatures you catch that you can't otherwise use. Make a room up above that you can dump down into the pit; burrow unruly nobles and such in said room, and pull the lever. Make sure that the area around the glass block walls is a dining room or other meeting area--glass block walls are clear as, um, glass, but creatures won't spook dwarves through them (because, according to the game, only windows and fortifications don't block line-of-sight.) Add in refuse, bones of idiotic warriors, and a bit of water for fun, and enjoy.

To strip goblins of gear, you have a couple choices. You can d-b-c and d-b-d over the cage they are in after being caught, then unselect the cage; OR, if you go over towards the gobbos when they first appear, 'v'iew their 'i'nventory to look at it, then hit enter, d, and escape for every item you want to have stripped from them on capture. Simply d-b-c over the cages when they're caught.

no offence, but really read the OP, he already stripped them

Yeah, dwarfs get happy thoughts from gob prisoners in cages, it's a good way to train soldiers or you could just let em run away I guess

btw, haulers don't flip out anymore when leading dangerous creatures from cage to cage and the creatures don't attack, so you can put em all in one cage. An en ettin was hauled through my whole fort (by accident) without incident.

Thanks for all the responses and suggestions, but while I was waiting for suggestions. I had some !Fun! with a forgotten beast that got past my defenses, then a goblin siege at the same time. Lots of !Fun!.

FB is trapavoid, so you'd need very different defences then what you'd use against a siege.

heh

set up a great way to kill FB with a walkway of upright spike traps. Marked the lever for repeated pulling. Watched the FB walk the twisty roads without disturbance. Marked the lever for dropping the whole thing 20 z levels for a good pull... watched as my whole fort crumbled because someone was having a party. lesson, if it's important, stop other labor on dwarfs.

Yeah, I managed to create a burrow and send all non military dwarves there, but unfortunately due to several deaths, Everyone was upset and tantruming. They started killing each other.

Maybe create a choke point with bridges on both end, wait for FB to get in, then pull the level. Then either kill it, or divert it to a pit under the entrance tunnel for those dwarving elves.

Do you know if this applies to thieves and snatchers? Goblin soldiers have always been able to be quietly hauled without any problems, it's the goblin thieves who have a bad tendency to escape and kill dwarves.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!
