(34.05) Caravans: Bug, or bad design on my part, or...?

So yeah. My caravans are kinda getting stuck here.

I'm several years into my fort, and this happens as the size of the caravans increases. It happened as early as 34.02.

When a caravan is coming in, the last few wagons slow down a bit and load into the depot very slowly. The ones behind them kind of get scrunched up into a line, and they advance forward very slowly.

When the humans are leaving, they take a long time to pack up (when they've "embarked on their journey". Sometimes, the dorfs are coming in when the humans are leaving. Then, they get stuck against one another, and a handful of dorf caravans are stuck waiting to get into the depot (kinda like in the picture). Eventually they get it all sorted out, but it can take as long as a season. Note the trail of stuff on the bridge - apparently more than a few wagons have, for some reason, spontaneously deconstructed. (I have wagon wood logs dropped all about despite none of the wagons coming under any sort of attack.)

Even if I put the Trade Depot in the middle of an open field, this still happens. Does this happen to anyone else, and have you managed to find a way to solve it?

i've heard people mention wagons are supposed to be alive. maybe they're also alcohol-dependent. and by the time they're leaving, they're desperate for a drink... and then they die of thirst on the way out =S

(really though, i have no idea).

Load-up time when they leave is directly dependent on how much stuff they have to pack up, from what I remember, so it's mostly long because wagons can hold a ton of crap.  I definitely noticed one wagon pausing for a second and the others pausing behind it in at least one caravan in my fortress, but I've got no idea what's causing that.

I suspect the wagons are slowing down because they are loaded with stuff.  Check and see if the slow wagons are carrying more heavier things then the others, like rocks or anvils. 

Your fort seems to be littered with spent ammo and corpses, I assume enemies were responsible for killing the wagons.  Maybe wagons don't alert you to an attack since they can't speak and don't have eyes? 

Normally when a creature passes through another, one has to crawl.  Wagons either don't crawl or are very slow when they do, so that they can't really pass each other.  Its an ancient traffic jam.

It wasn't just moving very slowly (although wagons do indeed move quite slowly).  It was moving at a certain speed for a while and then slowed down even more for a bit, then sped back up.  They definitely seem to try to not overlap one another if possible, however.

Enemies are not a factor. I have invaders and the like disabled currently.

I doubt the wagons were attacked by wild animals - nothing pushes in that far.
