As I said, yes, you can certainly posit plausible explanations for the event. My complaint is that it is historically not something that happens (NSTH).
And I'm not even getting into how a copper boning knife cleanly severed my wrist bone in one in-air slice... these villagers must be eating their Wheaties.
Historically, people most likely DID get their shield hands sometimes cut, especially if surrounded.

...Also, yes, civilian knives are OP. Welcome to Dwarf Fortress.

And keep in mind that it was a boning knife. Y'know, the thing butchers use to debone carcasses. The kind of blade that is the preindustrial equivalent to those butchering knives that are so sharp that workers can accidentally cut themselves and not notice until they pass out from blood loss.

Yeah... I've used boning knives. They're great for cutting meat *off* of bones, but pretty much total crap for cutting through actual bones. That's what cleavers were for.

Okay, good, you got that image in your mind? Now imagine a 'roided up silverback gorilla (your average DF NPC) stabbing you with it. It isn't cutting your bones, it's crushing them.  :P

I don't know where you all think the liver is, but it actually is in your upper body. I'm assuming, from the possible organ injuries and the ease of bisection, that dwarf fortress considers the lower body below the rib cage and above the legs. Thus a stabbing attack from the side on the upper body could go through the cloak, between the ribs (and the muscle there) and into the liver. Unless I'm missing something blatantly obvious which certainly is not unlikely.

I'm pretty much certain that is the case. But yes, it appears that the OP thinks the liver is somewhere below the intestines.

Wow, big rant.
Livers arent right, but idk why toady did it, not that it matters that much anyway, a heart is NOT needed for survival, i once modded in a syndrome for heart disfucntion, all you need is a head whit working brains, a upper spleen and a lung and a upper body and a lower body.
Thats all you need.
He did it because the entire health system is just a placeholder. It's on the to do list, as they say.

No... the OP wasn't sure how the liver could get properly stabbed without ribs getting in the way. I guess I somehow managed to stab him in the back.
The complaint about having someone start the fight by biting off my back teeth was much more relevant, but eventually I just started listing anything that felt at all odd.

You're all thinking in terms of that he stabbed STRAIGHT HORIZONTALLY..

What if he stabbed at the lower upperbody, aiming up? like | \|

Don't whine about your hand, he told you he had the high ground.

Once you tear apart someone's heart, they take a couple of turns to die from blood loss. Of course, they should progressively be getting weaker instead of still trying to kick your brains out, but other than that I see no problem.

Welcome to dwarf fortress  ;) all your issue belong to us.

Seriously though this is pretty normal, and mostly why people play the game, how else are you gonna bite someones back teeth off (lookin at nil eyegladzed here...)?

The engraver probably had a ton of willpower and endurance, most goblins would have fallen over in "PAIN" and "vomited" to death.

Also bears are massive creatures, you had your combat preferences set so you stood your ground when he charged instead of automatically dodging the larger creature, you got pinned and owned.

Bears aren't something to be fighting in melee combat in real life either. A good grizzly bear would give any knight or samurai a run for his money and a brand-new hole in his neck to spew blood from.
